And Then You Really Might Know What It's Like

Bill smirked when they got in the car to leave. “Okay, my turn.” he said, then pulled out his phone. “We have a date tonight.” he said, winking at Travis, who looked eager. “Tom?” he said into the phone. “Taten Sie es? Selbstverständlich! Wirklich? Groß, Dank.” He smiled and listened to his brother. “Jetzt erteilten Sie dem Kapitän Anweisungen, Ohrstecker zu tragen und für die Nacht unsichtbar zu sein?” he asked. He smiled at Tom’s reply. “Was denken Sie? Wir essen unser romantisches auf der Plattform zu Abend und dann bilden wir vermutlich Liebesrecht dort im geöffneten. Der Mann, den ich mit besagtem er sprach, könnte uns eine große Ansicht der Himmellinie ohne irgendwelche Boote garantieren, die nahe uns kommen und unser Datum unterbrechen”
Bill smiled. “Thank you so much, Tomi.” he said, then hung up, smiling over at Travis, who raised an eyebrow.

“You did that on purpose, didn’t you?” he asked, and Bill feigned innocence. “I heard Captain and romantic out of all of that. Please tell me we’re not curling up with a bottle of rum and calling that romantic.” he said, and Bill just laughed.

“No, but I’m not telling you otherwise!” he said, then leaned over to kiss his cheek. “I just really hope you like it.” he said, looking nervous. “I want to make your birthday special.” he said.

Travis just smiled. “The fact that you even bothered trying to plan a romantic evening for us makes it special enough, even if the date is a dud.” he said.

Bill hissed. “Don’t say that! There is SO much that could go wrong!” he said, then held Travis’s hand. “No, this has to be perfect.” he said, then smiled. “I love you and want to show you how much.” he said, beaming. “You’ve done a thousand wonderful things for me and even if you’re the manlier of us, I want to do something to show you just how much I love you.” he said.

Travis could argue that smiling was enough, but Bill had his heart set on making Travis a wonderful night to remember, and he wouldn’t argue. Even if the date went horribly wrong, which he hoped it didn’t for Bill’s sake, the conviction with which Bill spoke about showing him how much he loved him was enough to make it the best date ever.

Bill had set out nice clothes for Travis before going to Tom’s to finish things. He instructed him to be dressed and ready by seven. It was almost seven on the dot when Travis heard a knock and met Tom and Bill at the door. “Hello, I’m your driver this evening. I promise not to kill you guys or drive to scare you, since Bill threatens to castrate me if I fuck up tonight with my driving.” he said, sounding rehearsed.

Travis just smiled. “Nice. Bill’s done good so far!” he said.

Tom just smirked as they walked down the stairs. “Oh trust me, I knew my baby brother was a romantic, what with dreaming over finding true love since the age of twelve, but my hat is off to him for being the most committed romantic in the history of the world.” he said, then stopped Travis. “And if you don’t appreciate all of this and show him how much you appreciate what all he’s done-” eh cringed. “Even if I DON’T want to think about HOW you show him-” he shuddered. “I will come after you with intent to beat you to a pulp.” he said seriously. “I’ve never seen my baby brother so worried about getting something absolutely perfect at this tonight, and that’s saying A LOT, since he’s spent two hours on hair and makeup nearly every day since he was fourteen and I have seen him wash his face and start over five times.” he said. “I like you. You’re good to him. But I will kill you if you let him down after all this hard work.” he said.

Travis wondered what all Bill had planned. “Trust me,” he smiled and touched Tom’s arm. “Even if everything goes wrong, which I hope doesn’t happen, since Bill’s so committed, but if it does, I’ll still appreciate this more than anything and I don’t even know what it is yet.” he said. “Because in the car on the way home from my parents, Bill showed so much conviction to make me happy that the thought really does count more than enough for me.” he said.

Tom smiled at him. “I’m so glad you really love my brother, because me and you wouldn’t get along at ALL if you were any less wonderful to him.” he said, shaking his head as they walked to the car. “My brother is the most important thing in this world to me, and I’m so glad I don’t have to murder his husband for not treating him as well as I think he should be treated.” he said.

Travis just smiled and saluted, then climbed into the back seat beside Bill, who was absolutely stunning. He was wearing dark pants, a crimson dress shirt that hugged his body nicely, a black choker, and his hair was falling perfectly around his face. “God, you’re so beautiful.” Travis said as he regained the ability to speak.

Bill just smiled and eyed him in his perfectly ironed charcoal pants and pressed lavender shirt. “You are too.” he said, leaning over to peck Travis’s lips. “And now, sadly, you have to put on this.” he held up a blindfold. “Yes, I realized it’s black silk.” he said, blushing. “I forgot I needed one until half an hour ago and I had Frank bring me one really quickly.” he said.

Travis grinned. “Keep it, it may be fun for us some day.” he said, and Tom cleared his throat awkwardly, which made Bill flush.

“Come here.” Travis leaned down and let Bill put the blindfold on him. He felt Bill buckle his seatbelt and heard Bill’s own seatbelt click. “Alright, Tomi. We’re ready.” he said, and Travis felt him sliding their fingers together.

Travis tried to picture where they could be going, but after a few turns, he wasn’t quite sure anymore. They rode in relative silence until Tom’s voice rang out. “Bill, this is a bad time to ask this, but… he can swim, right?” he asked.

Travis frowned. “Um… yes, I can swim… kinda don’t WANT to… but- uh-”

Bill laughed. “Don’t worry, you wont have to swim… I hope.” he said, and Travis was seriously confused.

When the car stopped, Tom’s voice interrupted his thoughts. “Have fun!” he said. Travis felt Bill unbuckle him, and then climb over his lap to open the door so he could help Travis get out and not hit his head or fall down.

“Okay, we’re going to walk a little bit. There are some stairs, but I promise I wont let you fall.” Bill said, leading Travis. After a walk and some stairs, as Bill had told him, Travis heard Bill greet someone.

“Right this way, gentlemen. Mr. McCoy, please be careful with your step. Okay, step up.” the voice instructed, and Travis did as he was told, only to freeze when he felt the ground moving under him.

“Bill… why am I swaying?” he asked.

Bill’s voice came from beside him and he felt Bill’s hand back in his. “Just come over and sit down. Right here’s the chair. That’s right. You’ll see in a little bit.” he said, and Travis just trusted Bill. After a few minutes, Travis recognized the sounds around him, but chose not to speak out, not wanting to spoil whatever surprise Bill had planned. It was probably thirty minutes before the sounds of sloshing water became less, the wind stopped blowing as much, and Travis felt them stop moving as much as drifting. He heard a splash and realized the boat had anchored. “Happy birthday.” Bill whispered, then took off his blindfold.

Travis blinked. He and Bill were sitting at a table for two on the deck of a sailboat. He looked up and felt his eyes widen. They were on the lake and the sun was setting behind the beautiful Chicago skyline. “Wow.” he breathed. It was beautiful and breathtaking. “Holy crap.” he said, then looked at Bill, who was sitting just to his left, still holding his hand. “This is beautiful.” he said, and Bill smiled. “I just- wow. Really?” he asked, still somewhat in shock. “This- man, this is wonderful.” he said softly, looking at the setting sun.

Bill smiled and squeezed his hand. “There is a chef down below preparing our dinner.” he said, smiling at Travis, who just beamed. “Tom helped me find the captain and my parents sent money to pay for him to bring us out here and stay anchored until midnight.” he said, smiling. “The chef is preparing fine German foods, since I want you to get a taste for my home.” he said, smiling shyly still. “I just… you asked for a romantic date, and I could only imagine this as the most romantic thing I could do.” he said.

Travis just eyed him, completely impressed. “I never imagined you would do anything this wonderful, Bill.” he said, then leaned over to kiss him. “Oh my God, you are so amazing. I just… this is unbelievable!” he said. “Best birthday EVER. No doubt.” he said softly. He smiled at Bill, then they sat in silence, Travis’s arm around Bill’s shoulders as they watched the sun dropping behind the skyline, casting an orange glow through the sky, silhouetting the skyscrapers. They sat until the last ray of orange warmth dropped below the horizon, and were once again amazed at the beauty of the city’s lights from the water. Travis smiled at Bill, who looked happy. “Now I understand why your brother gave me a speech about how I better appreciate everything you did tonight.” he said, then smiled. “His threat really wasn’t needed to make me appreciate what all you’ve done.” he said, then kissed his temple. “This is by far the most romantic thing anyone has ever so much as TRIED to do for me.” he said. “I love you so much that you could have ordered burgers and I’d have been happy… but this!” he just smiled at Bill, who looked pleased. “This is just… completely perfect.” he said softly, then stroked Bill’s hair off his face when the wind whipped it into his eyes. “You are the best lover anyone could ever dream of…” he smiled a soft smile. “And I have you.” he said in a small, amazed voice. “I’m so damn lucky that- that I married you. You’re the most amazing human being alive, and you haven’t stopped amazing me yet, and I somehow don’t think you’ll ever stop amazing me!” he said.

Bill smiled. “I love you.” he said simply, and Travis felt his heart warm. “I was thinking earlier about how… I hope we’re like your parents when we get older.” he said, and Travis tilted his head questioningly. “They’ve been married forty years and even if they play argue, they do small things that make it clear that they still love each other just as much a couple can.” he said, smiling. “I want to still hold hands at the dinner table and share secretive smiles with you when we’ve been married forty years.” he said, smiling at him.

Travis kissed him softly. “I’ll always love you more and more every day that we’re together.” he said. “And if I live long enough to see our fortieth anniversary, I know I’ll still love you just as much then, if not more than I do now.” he said, kissing his forehead. “Where as my father is sixty on their fortieth year of marriage, I’ll be seventy.” he said.

Bill just smiled. “I’ll keep you young.” he said, leaning in for another sweet, gentle kiss. Travis just smiled and pulled him into a hug, holding him as they watched the lights of the skyline sparkle.

Travis and Bill were cuddling when a woman showed up. “Mr. Kaulitz-McCoy, dinner is prepared. Would you like the drinks first, or all at once?” she asked.

Bill smiled. “All at once is fine. No need to make you wait longer.” he said, and she nodded, then disappeared back below deck. “That was the chef’s assistant. They’re all going to chill out below deck for the rest of the evening.” he said, smiling.

The woman came out with a tray bearing glasses and a bottle of wine. “Here you are.” She placed the glasses in front of them and poured glasses, leaving the bottle in a bucket of ice beside them. She turned back to the tray and left glasses of ice water as well. “The chef and I will bring out the first course momentarily.” she said, and Bill nodded.

Travis smirked. “Went all out?” he asked.

Bill nodded, then tasted his wine. “Technically, this is illegal. Tom’s name is on the bill and he’s not twenty one.” he said, winking as he sipped some more. “Spätburgunder. German pinot noir.” he said, nodding to Travis’s glass.

Travis tasted and nodded. “Not big on wine, but I like it.” he said, and Bill smiled. “What are we eating?” he asked.

Bill just smiled. “You’ll see.” he said, then pecked Travis’s lips, smiling at his husband, pleased in himself for putting the loving and happy look on Travis’s face.
