No More
Sharpay glared at the object just inches away from her hand. She was showing a sign of weakness that she had rather not. The blonde took a deep breath, preparing herself for what was to come. She couldn’t have him believing she was unhappy, otherwise he would feel guilty. The petite blonde didn't want that. Taking another calming breathe and being sure the mask she often wore was properly secure, Sharpay reached out for the phone and dialed the familiar number.
"Hey Sharpay!" The voice on the other line greeted cheerfully, already knowing who was calling.
"Ryan," she greeted evenly, holding the phone tightly to her ear, "You're always so cheerful."
He laughed; "Well one of us has to be. How are you, Shar?"
She took a breath, "I'm great," she lied, "The Theater here is gorgeous. We've just started on a production of Aida. I got the role of Amneris. I'm really looking forward to the role. It'll be a step up from working as a stagehand. I still can't believe they had me work as though I were like all the others."
Ryan laughed, "Shar you kind of are. We're not in high school anymore, not everyone is afraid of you."
"I know that." Sharpay snapped, glaring at the picture of them together on her desk, "Ryan, I..."
His laughter died instantly, knowing something was wrong with his twin sister, "What's wrong Sharpay?"
She took a breath, "Nothing. Nothing is wrong. How's New York?"
There was a pause before, "It's fine. Sharpay..." His worried tone hit her and the tears slowly began to fall.
"I miss you Ryan!" She cried into the phone, holding it tightly to her ear, "It's just the not same without you here."
"Hey, hey Sharpay calm down. It's all right, everything is okay." He tried to reassure her.
“No, everything is not okay, Ryan!” She shouted, "doesn’t it bother you that we're hundreds of miles away from each other? I can't stand this being away from you, Ry!"
"Shar if you've felt this way before why haven't you said anything?" He asked.
"You were so damn happy. I couldn't ruin that for you. I put you through so much in high school and you were always there for me no matter what happened. I didn't want to take a-"
"Sharpay, shut up." Ryan stated, breaking into the blondes' babble. Sharpay froze; surprised her brother would take such a tone with her. He had never told her to shut up...ever.
"Ry-"
"No, listen to me Sharpay. You’re not the only one who’s feeling lost. All right! I miss you too. It's been torture without being able to see you all the time. But maybe this is what we need. The time away from each other. What we do...it's not right. If anyone found out, who knows what would happen? You need to find someone else."
Sharpay felt as though she had been slapped, her knuckles turned white as she gripped even tighter to the phone.
“How can you say that Ry?” She asked, her voice shaky.
Ryan sighed, “Pay, we just can’t. Not any more. It’s wrong. What would mom and dad think?”
“I don’t care! I just want you here. My brother...” she sniffled, “my lover. Everything just isn’t the same anymore.”
She could just see him shaking his head on the other end, "No more Sharpay. I'm just your brother. Find someone else ok? Be happy. We can't go on living like this." He muttered. "I have to go. I'll talk to you later...sis."
He hung up before she could say goodbye. Confused and heartbroken, the cell phone slipped from Sharpay's hand onto the cushioned bed. That wasn't how the phone conversation was supposed to go. He was suppose to easy her worries and calm her down by telling he would transfer before the next semester so they could be together again. He wasn't supposed to tell her everything was over. How was she supposed to take that? Never a quitter Sharpay wiped at the tears that just seemed to continue to fall. She had to be strong. No way was this going to happen, especially her of all people. She'd fight and whether he wanted it or not, Sharpay Evans would win the battle.
End.
