Let's Kill Reavers [[ground fighting]]

Jun 17, 2012 12:43

As soon as Wash and the others have the Reavers out of the air, Zoe starts leading her unit to the ship, weapons ready. If they're lucky, some of these bastards died on impact. But, considering how the day's going so far, she's guessing no. And she can't help but think about the last time she did this, the way they'd all nearly died. The day Wash ( Read more... )

Effie had been stalking away from Haymitch, who had managed to piss her off by bringing up her 'visitor' for the umpteenth time, when she had seen the crash happen. At first she had been confused about what was going on and she had turned to look for Haymitch but he was nowhere to be seen.

Still, she wasn't fully aware of the danger till she rounded the corner and froze at the sight of a couple Reavers running towards her. Or at least they had been running in a general direction till they saw the brightly dressed woman standing out among the village buildings.

As soon as she realized they were growling and running towards her, she screamed and turned to run. Not that she made it far thanks to the death-trap shoes she was wearing. She went sprawling and barely had time to get back to her feet when she felt one of them behind her.

He'd been stalking away in the opposite direction, drinking from his flask when he heard her scream. It was eerily like deja vu as he turned and ran toward the sound, remembering the arena.

He saw Effie go down as he rounded the corner and terror gripped him for a moment before he instinctively launched himself at her attackers his knife coming out as he dragged the one on her off his feet and slit it's throat before turning on the other.

The creature's breath was horrid as it fanned over her face but luckily he was gone seconds later though the sight of his neck being split open was startling. She swallowed another scream as she saw her rescuer then, scrambling back just a bit as she watched him turn to face the other attacker.

It was disgusting, oozing carved skin and a feralness that belied what it was. People, he knew that when he looked in the things eyes. These were people. Horribly warped and empty.

They were the embodiment of his nightmares, if it had the face of one of the tributes who had died when he hadn't it would be complete.

He ducked the things swing and knifed it, high in the ribs, thrusting his knife up into the things heart and twisting it free.

Then he turned to Effie, blood dripping from his hand, shirt front liberally coated and scowled.

"I told you those shoes were dangerous." Then he reached to help her up, gruffness hiding his real emotion.

It shouldn't have surprised her to see him move so quickly but it did. It was almost like watching the Haymitch she had first seen on the large screen except for the fact that he was older now.

Her breath caught when he got in close but she then relaxed just a bit when he dropped another dead body. Her throat felt tight as she reached for his hand and she wanted badly to launch herself into his arms...except he was a little too bloody for her liking.

"It's the cobblestone." She murmured as she squeezed his hand gently. Then she started to bend down to pull them off.

"And yet you still wear them," he glanced side to side then back down at her inordinately relived she seemed fine.

"I like them." Though maybe buying some flats wouldn't be a bad idea.

"What are those things?" She eyed the bodies, wrinkling her nose. Then she heard the growling and looked up in time to see a couple more bearing down on them.

"Hell if I know sweetheart, but if you could put a little speed into getting those things off, running might be a good idea." He turned just in time to meet another of the things face to face, struggling to fight it off, slashing it across the chest so it moved back.

Effie wanted to run but she couldn't just leave him. Pulling her other shoe off, she watched as he cut at one but there were too many.

"Haymitch!" She cried out as one came up to his side and that was when she acted purely on instinct. Lunging forward, she swung her shoe at the Reaver's face, aiming the stiletto heel right at its face.

There was a crunch close on the heels (ironic) of her saying his name ad he finally got his attacker subdued and turned in time to see the second on collapse. Had she just killed one of these things with a shoe?

It would seem so and there was Effie flailing just a bit as she held onto its mate. "Oh god, oh god...I loved these shoes!" She wailed just a bit, leaving the shoe stuck on the Reaver's face.

Then she looked up, about to scream as a Reaver reared up behind Haymitch but the sound of gunfire caused her to jump as the Reaver fell back, his body jerking with each bullet that hit it till it fell over.

"What the hell are you two doing? Git out of the gorram street!" A tall man with an impressive gun stalked towards them. He lifted the gun again, firing off a few more rounds at a couple more monsters rushing towards them and then he glared at Haymitch. "You want them raping and murdering your woman? And you?"

"She's not my..." he didn't finish the thought as the one with the shoe sticking out of it's face moved and he knelt swiftly to knife it, handing Effie her shoe back.

"We were going to the hotel." Well they were now.

Effie opened her mouth but Haymitch was already rushing to clarify she wasn't his woman. Then she wrinkled her nose when he offered the shoe to her. "No, just leave it."

"Whatever." Jayne shook his head before pulling a gun from the holster on his hip. "Can you shoot?" He asked Haymitch.

"I prefer a blade," but yes, he could use a firearm. Generally only Peacekeepers had them so he didn't use one regularly but he knew the basics.

He dropped the shoe, and resisted an eyeroll, if she loved them so much they could be washed.

It was more the thought that she had killed something with her shoes that would keep her from wearing them again.

"Use both." Jayne handed the gun over. "Get inside and get somewhere safe. Don't come out till you get the all clear. If you hear screaming, don't open the door."

He paused. "And if you need to, use the gun on yourselves." He nodded. "Come on, I can take you part of the way."

Haymitch took the weapon, checked it to make sure it was familiar enough he could use it and then frowned at the man when he suggested killing themselves if they had to.

"These things that bad?" He asked, reaching out to grab Effie's arm to keep her close as he followed the other man.
