tell me now where was my fault in loving you with my whole heart (closed.)

“McGee? McGee, are you even…” And there was a handful of popcorn playfully launched from one Evil Ed Lee towards the redhead in question. He smiles just a bit in amusement when she hardly seems to react. “McGee…Charlie.” That seems to work some and she looks at him, blinking in confusion before turning red and speaking. Did he just call her ‘Charlie’? What’s going…? Oh , right. Magic; The Gathering. Shit.

“Sorry. Sorry. Spacing out on spaceships. What were you saying?” They’d been outside for an hour, their answer to the shindig inside. Neither of them wanted to go. Neither of them wanted to be so much as near the event. It wasn’t their thing so Charlie suggested Ed teach her how to play Magic: The Gathering. And she’d made garlic free pizza on French bread to eat with it. They’d taken over the top of a table that was outside to watch the sky and learn to play and it was a very amazing evening, if either of them were going to be honest. “You were saying something about…I don’t even know. I’m so sorry.” And McGee had the audacity to look wonderfully apologetic.

Sometimes, Ed really just wanted to hate her for it.

“I was saying that…” and he was rambling, excited, and McGee was so fascinated by his enthusiasm. He seemed so human, so like any other guy her age and moments like this were becoming so frequent. She rested her elbow on her knee and her chin in her hand, listening as best as she could. But an unfamiliar sound in the air above pulled her attention elsewhere slowly but surely. Her head tilted back and up and Ed found himself looking as well at the unusual ship that flew past. He was silent, watching it fly by, tracking a few others that went, as well. The cards were put away, giving it up as a lost cause by this point.

Charlie seemed to take a hint from this and the food that was left over, minus the popcorn, was dumped in the nearest garbage bin and the top of the table swept off by hand before Charlie hopped back up and stretched out. Her hand thumped the surface. “Lie down. Watch the ships with me. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and there’s enough room.”

There was only minimal hesitation from Ed, a raised eyebrow at her as if he wasn’t sure who he was talking to. “You sure about that? Do you know how easy that’d make it for me to go for dessert? Your neck would be right there and-“

“I trust you.” That…was what was commonly known as a bombshell and Ed froze as Charlie spoke. She sat up to look at him when he didn’t move, tilting her head slightly. She studied him carefully, concerned, her big blue eyes on his brown ones and it was quiet for a few beats, the whoosh of a ship above lost in what had somehow become just the two of them. “I know I shouldn’t, but you’ve had plenty of opportunities to harm me and you haven’t. Hell, you were pretty much freaking out when I told you about what happened the other day. That doesn’t quite seem like the behavior of someone who wants me for dinner.”

“Was not. It coulda been a trick, you know. You still smell pretty damn good.” Ed Lee, ladies and gentleman. Ever the argumentative shit. Still, she was right. He was upset that someone had tried to hurt her and had reacted with territorial behavior he dare not question nor would he question the resurgence of the anger felt at the time. It was too much and he tucked that away, intent on just not thinking about it. Right now, there were ships to watch and a….friend? That didn’t feel right. Hardly the right word to use about Charlie but he didn’t care.

What Ed cared about was watching space ships and if he had to stretch out next to McGee to do so in the middle of some fucked up pocket dimension whatever the fuck village, he was damn well gonna. After some shuffling and some shifting and reconfiguring of limbs, Charlie had her head on his shoulder, her arm stretched out across his chest and Ed had his arm under her neck and around her shoulders because this was the only way to do this so neither of them fell off of the bench and had nothing at all to do with the wave of butterflies in their respective stomachs at the proximity or how the world suddenly went away and it was just them.

“I’m tellin’ you, Snack Cake. It just takes a subtle lean and your neck is mine,” Ed said at almost a whisper. Charlie smirked and lifted her head to look at him. She only had one thing to say about it before she settled again and was too lost in the world of spaceships to notice Ed’s fingers tangling in her hair just slightly.

“Charcoal briquette. That’s what you are.” Ed huffed out a laugh through his nose and continued watching the sky.

And both of them happened to think, at the very same time, that this was very nice indeed.
