Monday Afternoon Hunt (ota)

Apr 15, 2012 23:07

It was convenient to go to the store, once in a while, to get food for dinner, but Robin felt more pride in catching his own game rather than going to a butcher and purchasing meat. Today he was looking for a buck. He had a few others would expressed desire for some venison and so he knew the animal would not go to waste if he killed one ( Read more... )

This afternoon Katniss had decided that Rue was well enough for her to leave the clinic while she napped. The clinic, the indoors, had become stifling and she longed so much to be out in the woods. Katniss was hoping to run into the other hunter. The one with the crossbow. The one who left her berries. She'd already left him a fresh batch of cheese bread on the log where they always happened upon each other.

What she didn't expect was to cross paths with yet another, different hunter. Her head whipped around at the sound of a whooshing arrow while she tracked smaller game. She looked up, finding his hiding place instantly and she made her way toward him.

"Nice shot," Katniss said by way of greeting.

He watched the buck fall to the ground. He was certain the shot was an instant kill, but he'd still go over to make sure that the animal wasn't suffering.

He turned when he heard the other and smiled in greeting when he saw it was Katniss. He hadn't seen her since the tournament, but he certainly hadn't forgotten her. It was hard to forget it when you tied with a young woman.

"Thank you. I'm sure you would have done equally well." He pulled out his hunting knife and made his way toward the deer. "Are you out hunting as well?"

If he'd been anyone else from his time, he'd have thought the idea absurd, but living with Marian and knowing D'jaq made one more open-minded about strong, capable women.

When Katniss saw Robin she didn't know whether to smile or scowl. She wasn't quite sure what to feel about tying with him that one time.

She nodded her head at his question. "I haven't been in a few days," she added, taking in a deep breath just to take in the scent of the woods she missed so much. "I wouldn't know what to do with a buck that size." She smiled crookedly. "I wouldn't even be able to carry it." She remembered how she and the hunter with the crossbow worked together to put one down. It was a good memory. "Do you need help?"

"I would love some help. It'll save me a few trips." He had come across a few dead animals who hadn't been used completely - their skin still there, or parts of the tough meat. It drove him mad that people could discard useful parts like that.

"All things can be taken down easily if you find its weakness." He explained as he reached the buck and looked down. It was dead. "The skull is hard to penetrate with an arrow, but there are weak points. The eyes, ears... people always go for the forehead, but it's the toughest part."
