Nobody should be surprised that Hiro was apt to retreat into fantasy if he felt helpless or alone. It was a default response to life's stressors. Dad upset that you're not good enough? New comics. Mom sick? Comic books. Sister's friends treat you like crap? Comic books. Supplement that with video game and anime and you had Hiro's personal library of woe.
The village wasn't much different. Feel like a failure as a hero? Comic books. Lose your girlfriend (again). Comic books. Wonder if your powers really are going to kill you? Comic books.
It was something. It wasn't even a bad thing -- it wasn't like he was getting drunk or having lots of dangerous, promiscuous sex. It was just a hollow thing, sometimes.
Didn't stop him from working on a huge display of Fullmetal Alchemist books, though -- after all, his WORK now was comic books, and that made the retreat so much easier.
