O'Leary Montagu was sitting at the steps of the hotel, book in one hand, the other hand resting on his thigh, occasionally sneaking in his pocket for a grope at the jiffy though, to be honest, it didn't make him feel very good at all anymore. Just pathetic. The thought of getting rid of it nearly induced a panic attack, though, so he kept it safe ( Read more... )

"God be with you, Mistress Maggie, and how are the pups? And God and Mary and Patrick be with you Val..." wait, his father had told him something about Val not being Val.

"Except that I had forgotten that you are...Mr. Montague now. Forgive me."

Sam reached over and pet the great dogs head as if he knew her well.

"Pardon me if I am being impertinent, but you seem to be in a bit of a brown study, Mr. Montague." Sam was understating.

"I'm sorry?" he asked, blinking.

He was used to people he didn't know knowing him, by now, though.

"Oh...Oh, I...don't know....I suppse I am feeling a bit down today, father."

Carolyn was surprised by the sight of Maggie with her head in O'Leary's lap. From what she knew, the man was terrified of dogs. Her heart skipped slightly at the thought that maybe Val was coming back.

"Hi," she said softly as she approached, on her way home from the cafe.

He looked up at her, let out a smile though it wasn't as broad as it had been the other day.

"Hello, Carolyn."

Maggie groaned and nudged his hand. He petted her.

She sat next to him and scratched Maggie behind the ears. "How are things going?" She'd been in a fantastic mood, but seeing him made her sad. She couldn't help it.

He shrugged.

"Oh. I don't know."

He very much wanted to be held, but he had no one to hold him. Not even Livia, anymore.

He sniffled.

Carolyn was a lot like Mary, he decided.

That just made him sniffle again.

"Maggie," Dakin had offered to take her out that morning, and when she'd wandered off, he hadn't noticed immediately, a bit too engrossed in his book.

Seeing who she was with, however? "Oh. Is she bothering you?"

O'Leary looked up at the boy and quickly looked down again.

"She's fine."

Maggie pressed her face against O'Leary's ribs, encouraging more petting.

She looked more than fine. She looked utterly content, in fact. It was more Val, or not-Val, Dakin was worried about. "Do you like dogs?"

"I don't know many dogs."

He knew Nancy. He'd liked her, after awhile. Shed liked him too. She was also a huge beast of a thing. And named after the Mistress, no doubt. He wondered what this dog's name was. Something equally relevant to the Mistress, he hoped.
