Meg was dressed in her finest day dress for her appointment with her maman and the new Opera owners. The refurbishings were finally complete since everything that had happened with le fantôme d'opéra and they were preparing for their first production. Erik, on his way to leave notes for another rehearsal, spotted the young woman stepping out of his Opera House. He allowed himself a moment of gratitude that at least someone in this village knew how to dress like a lady. But when he looked a bit closer, he immediately shrank back against the side of the building, hiding in the shadows as he sent his voice out to her.

"It is not proper for a lady to be wandering unescorted, Mademoiselle Giry....where is your maman?"

Meg gasped and spun in a circle, her eyes wide. Le fantome! She would know that voice anywhere.

"I was to meet maman outside but..." She paused glancing left and right. "this is not Paris. How can that be?"

Erik sighed softly at the sight of what he thought to be fear from her, knowing he had cultivated it himself. He stayed hidden, watching her with worry in his eyes.

"It is hard to explain, petit danseur. I will not harm you, young one. Your maman is not here, though she may yet arrive. Until she does, I will act as your protector, if you will but trust me to do so. This village is no place for a young lady to be on her own."

Meg felt relief immediately, her muscles relaxing. Le fantome always took good care of maman and he'd taken care of Christine. Meg had always trusted him, for he kept his word. She gave a small curtsy and a smile in the direction of his voice. "Thank you, monsieur. What is this village?"
