The Holiday Ball ((Gathering Post))

Dec 16, 2011 16:59

All in all, the holiday ball comes together beautifully. There's a huge Christmas tree that Laura has nothing to do with - the village has a way of making things appear, and honestly, she's glad she didn't have to decorate it. There is a group of tables on one side of the large ballroom, decorated with deep red and gold and servers waiting around ( Read more... )

Spencer arrived wearing a tux with Sarah on his arm. He couldn't have been more proud to have such a beautiful, intelligent, kind woman by his side. For the first time he was really getting to show her off publicly.

His eyes widened at the sight of the ballroom all decorated with seasonal trimmings. He had never been to a party this fancy before.

"This kind of puts the FBI Christmas party to shame," he said, smiling and turning to Sarah. "Do you.. um.. want anything to drink or eat?"

[Everyone else catch him when he's off getting food or drink.]

At first Yuri didn't recognize the guy in the tux, but then she figured it out and smiled, walking over in her vintage dress with a big smile on her face.

"Hey there. You must have a fairly serious date tonight." It was a light, teasing sort of tone that would normally be for someone she knew better. You had to take things as they were in the village.

Like the fact that she hadn't entirely come alone to the party, but Mughi had deserted her and gone in search of food (probably).

Spencer smiled sheepishly at the blue-haired woman next to him.

"H-Hey.. yeah, my girlfriend Sarah..."

It almost had to be serious, when the guy wore a tux.

"Which one is she?" Yuri asked. There were so many varied dresses and most of them would work with a man in a tux. Women were generally more enthused about this sort of party than men were. "I don't know anyone named Sarah here."

Declan normally much preferred the casual look, but when he had to, he scrubbed up well. Formal occasions were nothing new - you didn't go through the army, attending evenings in mess dress without being able to fasten your own bowtie.

He stood to one side, looking around the room, glancing at the huge tree, wondering how the hell it arrived, and which poor sod decorated it.

Abby's actually pretty surprised she has a sort-of date even though she knows and Declan knows it's just as friends. She wanted to go for something dramatic and not like her and she thinks the sequined dress might be a little over the top but it's gorgeous and, better yet, she feels gorgeous.

"Hi. You look great, by the way."

Declan turned to her and grinned at her. "Never thought I'd have to wear a tux again," he admitted, looked at her dress more closely. "And you look wonderful."

"Thanks," Abby says, beaming at the praise. "I was a little nervous since this dress is kind of...not me. I'm not really that flashy but I just thought I'd take a chance."

She's been hoping Will would notice her, actually, but she hasn't seen him yet.

Nikola couldn't help himself in dressing unusually for the ball. Besides, it matched Helen's outfit, and Nikola loved to stand out in a crowd. This was bringing back many memories, good memories, of parties attended, both when he was in New York, and other places all over the world.

He'd been warned not to drink the place dry, but for once the village was supplying exquisite wine and champagne, and he couldn't help taking another glass as a server passed.

Helen had dressed in a long gown more suited to her own era than that of the village's and she thought she made a rather lovely pair with Nikola, who'd also gone Edwardian.

"Champagne first, perhaps? To fit with the festive mood?"

"But of course," Nikola said, handing her a glass, taking another for himself. "To what shall we toast?" It was remarkably comfortable to dress in Edwardian clothes again.

"To a long and healthy relationship, albeit with occasional patches of solitude, and to stealing the dance floor from everyone tonight," Helen said brightly, touching her champagne flute to his.

"And you? What will you toast?"

No one had told Anders that he probably shouldn't wear his best mage robes to a black tie affair (in fact no one had even explained what one was), so lo and behold, he was there in all his feathered splendor and really, could've cared less. Hey, he'd shaved! And combed his hair very well before gathering it into a leather strip at the nape of his neck, and even traded the gold hoops in his ears for studs. By Kirkwall standards he looked more than presentable for a formal occasion.

And no one was looking at him anyway, or shouldn't be, not when he had such a lovely date on his arm. "Maker's mercy, I didn't expect it to be so elaborate," he remarked to Alexis, shooting her one of his trademark grins.

"Neither did I." Alexis sounded almost breathless as she tilted her head back to look at the tall Christmas tree before taking in the rest of the set up.

If she saw anything wrong with how Anders was dressed, she didn't say anything, but that was probably because she thought he looked very nice. Plus the black went well with the blue and purple dress that she had chosen for the party.

Having left her hair down, she tucked a long curl back from her face while glancing over at him with a small smile. "The parties here are usually pretty spectacular though." At least from what she had seen.

"These happen often?" Anders asked, pausing to look up, and up, and up, until his neck twinged in protest, at the tree. "I'm guessing they don't all have the trees, though. What is the point of the tree, do you know?"

"There's a lot of old traditions, stemming back to fifteenth century though it didn't become widely popular until later." Alexis started, then looked somewhat sheepish. "But it's a long kind of history lesson." And she really didn't want to go all nerd on him at the moment.

"We put one up every year. We have a lot of old ornaments and sentimental ones." None that they had here though.

"Did you have Christmas back where you're from?"

Daenerys was utterly fascinated by the entire affair. As excited as she'd been to attend, she was a little overwhelmed by how the room and everyone in it glittered, the music and dancing that ranged from exuberant and joyful to slow and soft. Even though she'd overcome the meekness of her youth, she found she was most comfortable sitting and watching, quietly sipping from a glass of delightfully bubbly wine. She didn't really know how to dance--certainly not like that--and she wasn't certain her dress would've allowed her enough freedom of movement even if she did, but it was all right. Just being there was an experience she'd never had before.

A short but stout man took a seat next to her, a glass of some sort of punch in hand. He was dressed a touch fancier than usual, with a clean red silk shirt, but it still had a low v-cut exposing his chest. He didn't care for the fashions here. At least not for the men. The dress the woman he'd sat next to was stunning. Which was why he'd sat next to her.

He lifted her glass to her with a charming smile, "Hello. Not much of a dancer are you?"

Daenerys smiled and gave the man a quick, curious once over; she would've been surprised to hear him called a dwarf, as the term meant something different in her world, and he looked more like a stocky, albeit short man than a stunted and deformed imp.

"I'm afraid I never learned how," she admitted with a sheepish but warm grin. "And even if I had, the style of dance here is nothing like what I'm used to seeing. But still, I like watching."

He turned his head to watch the dancing, sipping idly at his drink, "It's different from what I'm used to seeing too. Mostly it's the music... very strange. But, I think I like it."

And how close everyone was dancing was different, and a couple looking like they were practically have sex on the dance floor. Now that was his kind of dancing.
