Dinner Party (Closed to Meg Giry, Faramir, Steerpike) [Forward Dated To Tomorrow]

Oct 10, 2011 22:14

((OOC: Posting this now, since I'll be at work at six tomorrow. ;)))Fantine had been up since very early, cleaning the apartment ten times over, making sure everything was exactly as she wanted it to be. She and Meg had been working on the menu and the food for days, and the apartment smelled of cooking pies, and the rest of the dinner that they ( Read more... )

It feels a bit odd to come to a party dressed in modern clothing. I've not even brought a knife as I'm wearing modern shoes instead of any sort of boot. A bottle of wine from Eryn Lasgalen. I know the meaning, Wood of the Greenleaves, but not the actual location.* The village has provided me with such before, and I have to imagine that I'll learn of the place some time in my future. Like the prince of Ithilien, it might not yet be named.

I've chosen ranger green and tan even for my modern attire. Meg has seen me in much finer and I hope it is adequate. All this just for showing Fantine where apples grew wild.**

What strange luck I have with ladies who come from France.

*The undocumented name of what Mirkwood becomes in the Fourth Age.
**So he has to have met Fantine before. She'll know he comes from Gondor, is a ranger, and very little detail. He was business-oriented on the gathering trip, if that's okay.

The young man whom he met some weeks ago has changed his sober, scholarly black for a more flamboyantly cut grey suit, and he's carrying himself a bit more at ease, now that he's settled into his surroundings. And he's also brought along a box from the bakery.

I suppose I should have realised that I might not be the only guest. Still, to see who the other is...

"Master Steerpike, it is good to see you again. I see it did not take you long to make new acquaintances." And lovely ones, too. But he is young, and that happens. "You are looking very well."

I do not wish to ask if his master is here and perhaps make him uncomfortable.

"Master Faramir, well met," he says, bowing, a small smile crossing his lean young face. "I have been finding my way about the village and I may soon have some employment at the apothecary shop."

Steerpike arrives after Faramir, clad in a slightly more flamboyant grey suit and bringing with him a bakery box containing a small cake, chocolate with a ganache coating and a small cluster of icing autumn leaves in the center. "I pray that I am not later than the bounds of propriety?" he asks.

Fantine is wearing a light blue dress in the style of her time. Her golden hair is swept up, but not severely, a few soft ringlets escaping to greatly soften the look.

When Steerpike arrives, her eyes twinkle and a bright and sincerely happy smile spreads across her face, a bit of color coming into her cheeks.

"You are right on time. I'm so glad you're here! I'm certain my cooking isn't as fancy or well-prepared as what you're used to in your kingdom, but I hope you enjoy it. Meg and I have been working all day on it, and we've both put a great deal of love into the cooking. Hopefully that will make up the difference."

She was perhaps talking a bit much, but her excitement and happiness at seeing him were both sincere and obvious.

To his eyes, she looks lovely and soft, easy to look on and almost warming his heart, if he was the type to wear it on his sleeve. "I do not doubt that it will be both savory and nourishing to the palate and the soul," he says. "And I have brought along an offering of my own to be added to the festal board," he adds, offering the box to her.

She took the box from him when he offered it, her eyes twinkling with delight.

"Oh, you didn't have to bring anything at all! I am so happy just to have you here," she said as she opened the box.

She was unused to receiving gifts of any kind, even something as simple as a hostess gift, and her face resembled that of a child on Christmas morning as she gasped in delight.

"Oh, it looks wonderful," she cried, and as she was one to act from her heart, as well as wear it on her sleeve, impulsively and almost without thinking she raised herself on her tiptoes and kissed him sweetly on the cheek.

"Thank you," she smiled.

As they went back in the kitchen to bring out the food, Meg could not help but whisper to her new friend and roommate in French.

"This seems to be going well - and your friend is quite the gentleman, is he not?"

Fantine blushed, but the twinkle in her eyes was a dead giveaway.

"He is wonderful!" She changed the subject very quickly, blushing furiously.

"And your Faramir is kind and very handsome."

Then it was Meg's turn to blush.

"Yes, I suppose he is." Then she laughed. "Look at us, blushing like school girls. We should attend to them, and perhaps something will come of it. I did tell you that not all the well-bred gentlemen were taken."

Fantine smiled and hugged her quickly.

"But it's wonderful to feel this way, isn't it? I feel more alive than I have in years. It's a wonderful feeling, but so terrifying at the same time. It's like jumping off a cliff and praying for someone to catch you. But whether they do or not, falling is an amazing feeling."

She looked at herself in the mirror, straightening her hair.

"He has promised to read me poetry in the park."

((OOC: Ack! Yes, I will tag that when I get home, sorry. Busy week has turned my brain into Swiss cheese))
