Annasophia "Sophie" Denise Langwell -
screenedingold [Maggie Gyllenhaal]
As hopefully made obvious by the surname, Sophie is Kit's sister. His younger older sister, he has two, and the older, Domonique, is married with kids. (These kids would be Johan and Jacob Travers of G2. Who, like all great n00bs, need journals. Though Jo really rather does want one so he can go say "I'm a Jo too!" to Rhye's Jo.) So being a Langwell makes her Brendan and Chris' aunt, and great-aunt to KT, Erin, and Josh.
She's very much a drama girl, as shown by her default icon. She isn't necessarily the overdramatic type who makes a song and dance about everything, nor is she your deeper-than-Lake-Taupo drama student skulking about all in black. She isn't a good enough singer nor choreographer for the former, and wears altogether too much color for the latter. She does like wearing hats, though. Craaaaazy hats. With anything and everything. At the moment she is favoring a pinstriped black hat from Supré.
Sophie also tends to go off on tangents quite a bit.
The reason why she is not a freaky-type drama student is because movies are more her thing. (Hence the username. screenedinsilver was too long, and in any case she likes gold better than silver anyway; and she wants to be winning gold things for her movies, like Oscars or BAFTAs or something, silver just isn't good enough.) This is not to say she doesn't know her wings from her stage left (though really anyone who doesn't is just a touch dim). She knows her way around the theatre, as a performer (bit parts, extras, dancing, chorus), crew, technician (sound and lights), costumes, hair/makeup, even on lucky occasions director. She just prefers camera work, how there isn't just the one crucial chance to nail everything.
Sophie isn't the spotlight type, though. Sophie wants to direct. Yet she continues to try out for tiny little shows and help out with school productions, just for the experience. She figures if you want to write the whole story, you have to know all the characters. (Interesting choice of metaphors there. She doesn't write. The extent of her writing is going through scripts and adding directions. She insists she had her fair crack at writing in School Cert and was crap at it. It's her and Kit's sister Monique who was the writer, she always made up the plots in their make believe games when they were little, Sophie bossed everyone around telling people what to do when, Kit got stepped on. It was Monique who grew up and won a slew of writing awards in fifth form and upper sixth, even the Katherine Mansfield at one point, then Monique who got married to a lovely but somewhat dim farming boy barely out of college. She could have moved to Wellington and been the next Katherine Mansfield. But that's another story.)
The thing about Sophie that I think I'm scared I'm going to get horribly wrong is how 'puffishly fair she is. She can see any given situation from the point of view of anyone involved, and if she can't see it she will ask. This makes her a terrible person to go to in a fight if you want her to take your side, because Sophie Langwell is a no-fight zone. Sophie Langwell is neutral ground. Sophie Langwell is Switzerland. Sophie Langwell buggers off.
Neutrality aside, Sophie looks at something and sees its potential. As a bit of a contrast, Jane Bennet-Bingley of Pride and Prejudice (which I just finished. it was good, though I seem to have completely missed Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy's getting engaged, go figure) looks at something and sees only the good. Sophie looks at something and sees what it could become if only it could get over its weaknesses. This is what draws her to directing - she'll read a script and have a vision of how fantastic it could ideally be, then step back from that and create it as well as she can with the means available. Achieving this vision is near the only thing she'll fight for. If she's got a pissy diva who won't take directions, then by god Sophie will lay the smackdown.
On a completely random note, Sophie is a huge Harry Potter fan (but you didn't hear this from me), having read the books after seeing the movies while babysitting Jo and Jake. She spends rather more time online than she'll confess to - she's one of those sliiiiightly hypocrytical Harry Potter closet geeks who sits around saying fandom is pathetic and people like that must have no life whatsoever then turns around and writes fanfiction or something. Her favorite is, I think, Prisoner, in terms of both book and movie.
And I just thought of a username for Kit so I'll go do that and then both Langwells can make their entrance, hurrah.
EDIT: Kit is at
arcadianidiot, fully a takeoff of American Idiot, because he's a country boy and he's an idiot (I mean, he's doing a BA in European Studies with a focus on French...and he takes lots of Maori courses -_-). And I've decided that Patrick Fugit is bloody impossible to find decent icons of. It is most frustrating realizing that :O I may well have to make them myself. Lazy? Me?
