reading is sexy

I love libraries. Even in this day and age. Even though it is apparently uncool enough that even my DAD was like "Um, really, people still go to libraries?" Yup. I do. I looooove libraries.

When I was home this weekend, I got all giddy driving by the Wilmette and Winnetka libraries, where I spent so much time as a kid. I remember going into the library for an afternoon, grabbing a book from the shelves, preferably one I'd read already 3 or 4 times, probably by Judy Blume or something, curling up and reading the entire thing right there on the spot. Libraries became less appealing over time, when they became a study group spot in high school and the home of terrifying thesis research in college. But now, I am free to love them again. They smell like...newspaper, but not in a work kind of way. And they're all quiet and dimly lit and fluorescent and just have that library FEEL. And there are books, which is really the only thing I need for life to continue, generally. And free. Did I mention free? Free, I tell you.

My old apartment was directly across the street from a branch of the Atlanta library. The convenience was fantastic, even though the selection there wasn't stellar. But now that I've moved a whopping three blocks, I live in a different county, which, coincidentally, has the best library system in the area. Huzzah! So I've been binging. My favorite innovation is that you can request books online now and they will email you when they're ready to be picked up and hold them for you at the desk, get them from different branches for you, etc.

I wonder if I should get them to grab me a Judy Blume just for old time's sake.
