Video Game Mock-up
‘The Raven’
Edgar Allen Poe

Edgar Allen Poe is a highly influential artist of classic literature, he is also one of my favorite authors. Poe offers a unique morbid perspective into his subject matter, yet his writings are enjoyable to a broad audience. His writing is well known and accepted today, in his time period it was a bit dark and he receieved little credit for his work.

Poe would make a intriuing video game lead character, now the graphics would have to be mild in saturation to give to the high contrast effect. When I read his work i think of either a black and white movie to set a dark mood; more of a Tim Burton style. For example, Sleepy Hollow, Burton used low key lighting with little saturation except the overexaggerated bloody scenes. The general idea would come from his morbid subject matter, in this case focusing on ‘The Raven.’
The overall scene would take place in Poe’s modern time, the late 1800’s. It opens up with the protaginist Poe and he has been waken from a nightmare. He looks around to see nothing but candles in the wind, all of a sudden he hears knocking. He jumps up startled and searches the room, all along the camera is first person angle, it is like your there searching for what is making that haunting noise in your ear. Another knock, he sets his eyes on the door, he looks around with a bewildered look on his face wondering who that could possibly be knocking on his chamber door.

The game begins with this narritive intro, then starts when player one opens up the door. Also exaggerating the sound effects such as the door opening, perhaps creeking on the wood floors and heavy breathing to set the mood of the scene. The camera zooms in with loud theatrical music, the player sees nothing but pitch black. His voice as if a whisper in his ear, “Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, doubting dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before. But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token and the only word there spoken was the whispered word, Lenore.” Returning to his chamber, character one’s goal is to look through for the source of this unknown noise. The knocking starts again, character one turns towards the window, opens up the window and in flys a Raven.
The Raven watches, screams and perches on the top of his chamber door. Character one’s goal is to kill the Raven, the bird morphs into a larger demonic bird and begins to attack the main character. After the bird is destroyed the character escapes out of his chamber into the darkness, he begins to run and run. As he continues to travel through darkness he runs into an unknown figure, it is a young woman. He freezes and says, “Lenore?” the young woman then bites him on his shoulder and begins to make aweful moaning noises. He backs up in shock and she approaches him, a crack in the wall brings in a little moonlight, with that little light he gets a glimpse of her face. It is Lenore, but one of the undead come to feast on his flesh. This is how the videogame opens up, many of the dead, come back to feast upon the flesh of the living, unfortunately for the main character his chamber is right next to a cemet
