Michael Moorcock has been around since, well, forever, or at least the Sixties. He's a terrifyingly prolific author...check out his Wiki page. It's scary how much the man has written. I see that someone's already pimped out the Eternal Champion saga Jherek Carnelian for the win, so I'm going to have fangirl squee about Jerry Cornelius, one of the most original, weird, wonderful and hip characters, ever. So hip.
Though Jerry himself would probably say "Christ, that's the last thing I need."
How to even begin talking about Jerry? At the heart of it, he's a funky, pansexual, time travelling, drug taking, incestuous assasin, who can change his gender, race and physical apperance without much effort, though he does get stuck sometimes,or comes down with death, or amnesia. He is an anarchist, a revolutionary, a false Harlequin, an aspect of the Eternal Champion, a wanna be rockstar, a scientist, and a hep cat.
In his most usual form he has longish black hair, pointed boots, wears a black car coat and carries a gun that shoots needles. He's a bit of a dandy, but often out of fashion with whichever world and age he's in.
I really can't do justice to the books, they are far too complex, and interconnected to summarise. Essentially, it's Jerry and his fellow time stream wanderers playing with the history of the Multiverse, by supporting various rebellions, by killing some people, by working on personal vendettas, projects and interests, and sometimes, by just being in certain places.
They are wonderful, and deeply layered fiction, and I wish that I wasn't the only person writing fanfic for the series! The list of Jerry Cornelius books are as follows (they aren't linear in any sense. Read them in any order):
Novels
* The Final Programme
* A Cure for Cancer
* The English Assassin
* The Condition of Muzak
Collections
* The Lives and Times of Jerry Cornelius
Associated Novels
* The Adventures of Una Persson and Catherine Cornelius in the Twentieth Century
Novellas
* The Entropy Tango
* The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle (a.k.a. Gold Diggers of '77).
* The Alchemist's Question
* Firing the Cathedral
Also, Dancers at the end of time deals with some Jerry's descendants.
I completely reccomend all of them, and hope that someone else will write fic!
And now a link to my Jerry fic. It may not be awesome as, but it will do.
