I have to decide in the next couple days if I want to go to Costa Rica in January (and miss pretty much the first week of classes- which, hey, are generally wildly boring anyway, and this experience may not be repeatable), plus finish my term paper draft. Then Thanksgiving break will be here, and I will rejoice. Hehe

So, here's what I DO have to say!
Passports can take some time to get, up to 3 months, although I believe mine took about 4 or 5 weeks to get to me. Ack -- that just adds to your "decide already!" problem, because you would have to race to get a passport and possibly a visa -- although I don't know much about that.
It sounds so glorious. How long is it? What program/group does it? How many people go? What's the cost? What do you do there? Are you picked up at the airport and everything? If you're all taken care of, then that, in my opinion, wipes out 85% of all worries and should-I-do-it feelings. It's no fun to be confused in a foreign country, but if you're with English speakers who pick you up and give you the food and transportation and guidance then you can really enjoy the culture without the shock, crying, homesickness, etc.
As for flights: I've searched dozens of sites and none is cheaper than Orbitz.com. Plus, you get to pick your seats which absolutely rocks!!
I think talking to the professors would be your best bet, and if they know you're doing volunteer work I think that would put you in a good light. It's not like you'd be asking, "So, uh, hey, there's this massive week-long party? In Chicago? And I'm going to be a week late, OK?"
I'm pondering the same things about Romania, minus the school stuff. Just, should I go should I go should I go am I ready am I ready am I ready stuff. If you end up going to Costa Rica, I may just have to apply for the Romania program. I'll be very inspired!
