Geriatric Chinese food
Cloud Garden
Chinese food restaurant
17 East 25th Ave
San Mateo, CA
I’ve had my eye on this place for a couple months. Cloud Garden sounds like the name of a rock band. When we first arrived, there were only two other people in the restaurant - an old couple. There was a large display of a dietary supplement for sale. The people I went with commented that the tea tasted like metal. The waitress was almost too talkative. She wanted to know where I worked. She wanted to know how we knew about the restaurant. I told her I had seen it while driving by and liked the name. She told a story about how someone somewhere had told her it was a good name.
Anyway the food was pretty plain, simple, edible, but nothing especially great for the price. The big crazy fried pot stickers ($6.45) were pretty good. The cashew chicken ($7.35) and vegetable chow mein ($5.95)weren’t exciting but we still finished them between 3 people.
The strange thing was how over the course of the 45 minutes we were there, the restaurant filled up with people - all over the age of 60. Apparently Cloud Garden is the official Chinese restaurant of choice for San Mateo senior citizens.
This place just needs to either be cheaper or serve better food for me to go back.
