Foods to Boost Your Mood

Mar 21, 2011 10:42

Winter weather and daily stress takes its toll on our moods this time of year! If you feel down and disinterested for more than a couple weeks, talk to a counselor or your physician. Here are some easy dietary changes that can help as well.

I've found that people often underestimate the effects of nutrition on mood. Low blood sugar has been found to contribute to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Don't skip meals! Even if you don't have an appetite, eat a serving of something (maybe one of the foods below).
Coffee, when combined with a healthy diet.
Foods rich in B vitamins, which help your body cope with stress. Some good sources are fortified cereals (such as Kashi U), bananas, turkey, tempeh, tuna, lentils, eggs (remember: all the vitamins are in the YOLK!), avocado, and dairy products.
Protein- because foods rich in protein are also high in tyrosine, an amino acid found to boost feel-good hormone dopamine.
