I'm having a hard time forming an opinion.

God bless us everyone
we were broken people living under loaded gun
And it can't be out-fought,
It can't be out-done,
it can't be out-matched,
it can't be out-run,
No
-Linkin Park, 'The Catalyst'

One thing I like, though, is how original the song is. Which is something Linkin Park has always been pretty good at achieving. The thing that bothers me, however, is that it seems too beat/sample heavy. Like, the guy who won the 'Linkin Park featuring You' contest... I found his remix of the song to be so techno-rave-pop heavy and annoying, and Mike told him: 'It's like you've heard the album, it flows so well' (paraphrased). Really? While some of the music I'm really into right now is pop-driven, the thing about Linkin Park is that they've never been that way. There's been heavier forces driving their music, and maybe that's the thing that's lacking. There are definite pieces of the song that I absolutely love--the beginning in particular, and of course the lyrics are nothing less than exceptional, as per usual. But as an overall song, it doesn't seem to flow quite that well to me. At times, it feels as if it's two--maybe even three--songs just spliced together.

Nonetheless, it is very experimental--something LP has held true to the past 10+ years. Always have respect for that. Always love that. After a few listens, the song is growing on me. But, I mean--it's Linkin freaking Park, I don't feel as if I should have to listen to the song on repeat until I have a comprehensive sense of it as a whole. I feel like I should hear the song and immediately love it because I've loved them for about 10 years now! It is what it is. It's a good song, it's growing on me, it's different--it has the potential for greatness, but I'm not sure if 3+ years was worth the wait.

review, the catalyst, mike singing makes me happy, a thousand suns, linkin park
