October rec #3, three one-shots

Oct 16, 2011 19:08

For my third week I'm reccing three stories. They are all written by the very productive lomonaaeren
and what they all have in common is that they are very special in their own way. They all stand out.

Title: Be Careful What You Drink For
Disclaimer: J. K. Rowling and associates own these characters. I am writing this story for fun and not profit.
Pairings: Harry/Draco, implied Harry/Ginny
Rating: R
Warnings: Sex, mild angst, weird humor, no mention of the epilogue.
Wordcount: 9000
Summary: Harry drank the potion because he wanted to know his future. Perhaps ignorance is bliss.
Author’s Notes: Written for an anonymous one-shot request: a fic where Harry takes a potion to get a glimpse of his future since he's started dating Ginny and wants to know how things will turn out, only to discover that he's actually planning his wedding to Draco. This prompt inspired me. Thank you, commenter, wherever you are.

Why I loved it: It was a brilliant promt that made for a very good one shot. I really felt Harry's confusion and curiosity and it had just the right amount of flangst.

The second one has a title I couldn't forget and that title seems to go around a lot. ;)

Title: Surprised by Joy
Disclaimer: J. K. Rowling owns all characters appearing in this story.
Rating: Call it a light PG for vague approximations of sex.
Warnings: Contains DH spoilers. Set before the epilogue.
Length: ~3450 words.
Notes: I know the title is the title of a C. S. Lewis book. But he stole it from Wordsworth first, so I feel quite comfortable stealing it from him.

Why I loved it: This story really touched me. It had me in tears and I couldn't stop thinking that this is what we all want, to be surprised by joy.

The third story is one of the most special stories I have ever read.

Title: A Sound Like Serpents Singing
Pairing: Harry/Draco preslash, past Draco/Astoria
Rating: PG
Wordcount: ~12,500
Warnings: Profanity, angst, issues of disability (Draco is blind), partial epilogue compliance (Draco’s marriage existed, but not Harry’s).
Challenge: for auroraprimavera
Keywords: book, window, heartache
Dialogue: “Why can’t you trust me?”
Summary: When Draco Malfoy wants a magical snake for his son, he turns to the best in the magical world-serpent-breeder Harry Potter. Harry, who thought that all his past grudges had been settled, is startled by the way he responds to Malfoy. For many reasons.
Author’s Notes: Beta-ed by Linda, a good friend of mine, who is willing to put up with my love of Harry Potter in return for the chance to be savage about grammar and spelling.

Why I loved it: I was completely captured by this story. It was different from everything else I had ever read so far and I haven't been able to forget it. Some stories stay with you, others are light reads that you enjoy then and there, this one stays.
