Fic: "Tears"

Apr 17, 2008 20:10

Fandom: Ambiguous
Title: Tears
Rating: PG
Pairing: Gen/Ambiguous
Warnings: Uhh...beware the depression? Oh, I've been told the ending kills people, so beware of that, too.
Spoilers: None
Word Count: ~500
Notes: NOT an elaborate fic (maybe more of a ficlet) at all, mostly dialogue, and very mellow and plaintive. *shrugs* I've been having a depressing time. Also, was originally posted for Psych, but you can really plug any fandom you want in to it.
Summary: You don't know if you want to wake up or not.

"If you cry on your back, you get tears in your ears."

You lift your head from the mattress to stare at him in confusion. "Huh?"

"If you cry on your back, you get tears in your ears."

"Okay...?" You don't think you have the energy for one of these conversations.

He shrugs. "It's just something a friend used to say."

"What's it mean?"

He laughs. "No idea. I always meant to ask her, but it never really seemed important."

You straighten your spine back out and stare at the ceiling. "Sounds profound."

He nods with a smile and makes his way to the bed. You feel it slope to your right when he sits down. "Yeah. Too bad its meaning was buried with the philosopher."

That catches your attention. "...What happened to her?"

His eyes dim a little, but you know he's trying to keep a strong face for you. "Cancer. Stomach cancer. I didn't even know you could get cancer there, but apparently, the shit can show up practically anywhere."

You 'hmm' and say nothing more. He sighs.

"You're going to have to get up sometime."

"Why's that?"

"Because if you cry on your back, you'll get tears in your ears."

You roll your head to right and stare at him. "Who says I'm crying?"

"Your eyes." Your eyes glare at him. "When things were just plain old shitty, I would just want to lay on my bed and stare. Maybe I thought if I stared long enough, God, or whoever the hell is in charge, would finally show up and tell me that it was all ok, it was all apart of the plan. Or maybe if I just kept looking ahead, I thought nothing around would affect me, like a horse wearing blinders. Then, she'd come and tell me not to cry on my back, because I was getting tears in my ears. And you know, they always leave your face feeling itchy and they tickled and were cold by the time they reached your ears. Then she'd pull me up off my bed...or push me out of it and onto the floor. Depended on how stubborn I was being."

"Nice story."

"True story."

"What's it got to do with me?"

He glares at you with kind eyes. "Do I need to push you out of bed?"

You turn your head back to stare at the ceiling. Maybe you're waiting to see God or maybe you're wearing blinders. "If I cry on my back, I'll get tears in my ears?"

He nods. "It's a fact."

"If I cry on my side?"

"You'll sleep on a soggy pillow." He smiles and leans over to press his lips to your cheek. "Now get up," He whispers in your ear.

You realize you're awake now, alone, and no one's lips are on you. The cool tears tickle as they slid down your face and pool in your ears.
