In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
Erg. Self-reccing is always hard for me. But here we go:
The Second Time Around, a Fraser/Kowalski due South fic written for last year's due South Seekrit Santa. I agonized about it, because I didn't know my recipient, and I struggled to write something I thought they would like. In the end, I started writing for myself. I still thought it was a disjointed mess and I wasn't sure where I was going with it, but I showed it to Aka, and she just, I don't know, showed it back to me, I guess. But seeing it through her eyes, I saw the good stuff that was there and not the stuff I had felt was missing. *shakes head* That didn't make much sense, but it was an awesome experience. I really like how the story turned out, the structure and the humor, and I'm still proud of it. (I also enjoyed writing the 2012 fic, and learned a lot from it as well, but it seems this year's dSSS is still seekrit...)
I am really, stupidly in love with my Flashpoint Hospital AU. Writing Ed/Sophie in Crumble (
LJ,
DW, or
AO3) really set me free to explore not just an AU setting, but AU characterizations for my favorite Flashpoint peeps. And then I wrote
Between Heartbeats - another 22k in that 'verse - for the due South/c6d big bang. The whole thing is in Greg's POV, which was a challenge, but I liked how it made me stretch to show not just how Greg felt about people, but also how the other characters felt about Greg. It's also a V relationship (Ed/Greg, Ed/Sophie) that turns into an OT3, neither of which I had written before. And to top it off, it's a complete AU setting, so I had to work out what the other characters were doing and add in enough details to make the setting realistic. (Thankfully, Luce was around to keep me from adding TOO MANY details!) I am very proud of it and love the whole 'verse to bits. It's one of those things where no one will ever read it, except for Luce and Ande and theleaveswant (who made a
kickass soundtrack for the fic, complete with a cover with Hugh in scrubs), but I don't even care. I wrote this for me, and I'm happy with it. This is kind of new for me. When I first started posting fic, I was always afraid that no one would ever read what I wrote, and wouldn't that be horrifically embarrassing. With Between Heartbeats, I just think it's funny as hell that my beta left kudos and my complement creator left a comment and it's crickets from the rest of the universe. I love it, and if everyone else hates it, I'll just keep it for myself. It's so wonderfully freeing, writing just for yourself. I plan to do more of that in 2013.
