non-fannish passion

Today's Snowflake Challenge is to share a non-fannish passion with your f-list. Most of you already know this, because I complain/brag about yarn crafts a lot, but I love to knit and crochet. I find it relaxing and soothing to do something with my hands, and I love that I can listen to podfic or watch tv (depending on how complicated the pattern is) while I do it. I love the hands-on part of turning something into something else. I also really enjoy making patterns, because it's kind of an arty thing, to create from half a mile of string something solid I wanted to see, but it's still something my left-brain programmer-type personality can get a hold of. I suck at most art, especially things like drawing. I adore watching other people draw and looking at their art, and I wish it was a skill I had. But if my life depended on it, I couldn't draw you anything that looks different from what your average 8 year old produces.

I also enjoy stained glass, for many of the same reasons. I like taking square sheets of smooth glass and cutting and shaping pieces into arching leaves or curved flower petals or whatever. And I like foiling and soldering and bending lead came. It's the kind of hobby that leaves you with little burn marks and cuts everywhere, so not a lot of people are in to it, but I've always been a pretty tactile person. And it reminds me of the Saturdays of my childhood, which were spent woodworking with my dad and then sewing or cooking with my mom.
