Day 2 of our trip saw the speeding view outside the train window evolve
from the green and pleasant land around Metz to the spectacular scenery
of alpine Switzerland.
Our next few days were based within the old quarter of the now large
and modern town of Chur, sitting next to the young river Rhine and one
of it's tributuries. If I was a true "grockle" (like Twoflower) I would
be calling it 'quaint'. I was also reminded of my hometown - an ancient
centre based around an old cathederal and now besieged by a much larger
modern town.
Day 3 meant an early start for a pre-booked excursion on The Bernina
Express - a metre guage train following a route that took us over High
alpine passes in loops and spirals that make the Ffestiniog look flat
and staight.
We got our first sighting of glaciers as we went over the Bernina pass.
Wow! The the summit of the Bernina pass was at 2253 meters above sea
level, the highest for a main-line railway, and was like passing
through another world compared to the green valleys below.
The special train's destination was Tirano, just over the Italian
border, taking us into yet another country and the third language in as
many days. After a picnic in the park we did it all again from the
other direction. :-)
