Teaching, learning, and webcomics

The students, they drop like flies! No, really. The summer semester's pretty bad for students withdrawing. I think a lot of them don't realize how much work it's going to be. Lord knows I was pretty floored by my first summer semester. But yeah, my class is shrinking (and no, it's not my teaching).

Had to read Bleak House for the class in which I'm a student. It was actually really good. I was surprised, because I really hated Dickens the first time I read him (A Christmas Carol) and was pretty much indifferent to A Tale of Two Cities and Oliver Twist (or whatever ... I only saw the movie). Anyway, really liked Bleak House, and while I still think the characters are flat, I think flat characters actually work better than round characters for what he's doing in this novel.

I've been feeling inspired to do that webcomic again. It's been forever since I looked at Questionable Content, but I revisited it this week. What amazes me with it is the huge difference between the current art and the art from the very beginning. I mean, those first strips were pretty crappy art-wise (no offense, Jeph), but now they're really impressive. They're still cartoony, but they've got a distinct style. And it's still evolving. It's only within the last fifty or so strips that the artist has started using a new, more realistic technique with the characters' hair. I really like that constant improvement. And it makes schmucks like me feel like hey, it may take 1700 pages, but I can get better.

And that's the news from Lake Wobegone (or is it Woe-be-gone?)
