From bobcats to blackberries

Jul 03, 2010 13:30

This morning, the kids I've hired for some outside lawn work reported sighting a bobcat. Wish I'd been able to see it, but happily it disappeared in a flash as soon as it realized humans were nearby. If it'd just casually hung around long enough for the kids to fetch me from the house to see it, we'd all be calling in a potential-rabid-animal report.

I'm crediting their sighting because they're both avid hikers and wildlife-lovers who've seen bobcats in the wild before, so they know the difference between "big feral cat" and bobcat. Plus, although it's been a while, I've heard bobcats and seen their prints on our property.

While the kids were removing vegetation-too-close-to-the-house from outside, I was inside doing laundry, roasting coffee, answering work emails, making ice tea for everyone, another load of laundry, disassembling and degreasing the stove grilltop, some litterbox changing-out.

We just gave in to the heat, shut the windows, and turned on the A/C. It was nice while it lasted.

Kicking myself for not going out to harvest the blackberries before the sun got high. Maybe I'll see the bobcat if I do :)
