Yuletide Dear Author Post

Dear Yuletide Author:

If you're one of those people that always writes male characters, and you got stuck with my requests, I feel for you. So hopefully you're one of those authors that well-versed in writing female characters that pass the Bechdel Test, because that's my favorite kind of fanfic.

If you're curious about what I write, you can check out havocs_cry, my personal fic comm, which has a link to my fic index in the sidebar. If you're curious as to what I read, you can check out my recs list on delicious. I have a deep and abiding love of femslash, gen, and het, and, while I've dabbled in slash, am not as interested in it, due to the general lack of female characters as a central part of slashfic.

I should also mention that I'm not really in the mood for angst, but I'm not really a fluff person either. Which leaves you in this ambiguous middle ground, doesn't it? I'm sorry, I wish I could be more help. I love awesome people doing awesome things in a competent way, and coming out of their problems the better for having solved them, or, at the very least, not worse for them.

Fandom 1 - Bram Stoker - Dracula
Characters - Lucy Westenra/Mina Harker

I would love Lucy and Mina's friendship, preferably in a post-novel alternate universe where they're both vampires, but definitely in a way that deals with the actions of the series. I would NOT enjoy either Mina or Lucy in subservient positions to Dracula, or to any of the other characters, for that matter. I keep seeing post-novel fic where Mina is trapped and miserable - yet erotically satisfied - by vampire Jonathan and/or Dracula. *yawn* So not my thing. I want Mina and Lucy to have control of their own destinies.

Yes, I know Lucy is actually dead-dead, rather than undead, by the end of the novel. On the other hand, this is Dracula we're talking about. Death is flexible when vampires come into play. I would be happiest with femslash or gen, but don't mind het, if you would like to work with that instead. Please no boyslash, but I have no objection to bringing in any other characters you might need to tell the story properly.

Fandom 2 - Sharon Lee and Steve Miller - Liaden series
Characters - Anthora yosGalen/Miri Robertson/Nova yosGalen/Priscilla Mendoza

These are four strong-willed, independent women, of different backgrounds, each with different skills. The books never gave us enough of the four of them interacting with each other, and I'd love to see that happening.

In this case, I would prefer gen or het (though if you can come up with an awesome femslash idea, I'm all for it). I'm a sucker for the canon pairings in this fandom, but would prefer the focus to be on the women of this universe and their interactions with each other, not with their focus on the men in their lives.

I've read all the way through I Dare, as well as Crystal Soldier and Crystal Dragon, so please feel free to cover any portion of the series that you want, or go right to post-series. Again, I have no objections whatsoever to your writing other characters, if you need them to tell the story you have in mind, though I ask that you keep boyslash out of the fic, even as a background pairing.

Fandom 3 - Kindred: the Embraced
Characters - Caitlyn Byrne/Lillie Langtree/Sasha Luna

Some year, someone will write me K:tE femslash. :) Maybe I'll get lucky, and this year will be that year. I would be fond of either Caitlyn/Lillie or Sasha/Lillie, not Caitlyn/Sasha. Bring in whatever other characters you want except, please, God, no Frank Kohanek. I'm sorry, I just didn't enjoy his plotline. I especially adore Sonny and Julian.

You could set this any time during the series, or even post-series. Whatever works best for story.

Whatever you write, whatever your genre, I'm looking for a story that focuses on the women and their relationships with each other, and not focusing on the way they feel about the men of the series. Also, once again, please no boyslash.

Fandom 4 - Roger Zelazny - Chronicles of Amber series
Characters - Deirdre/Fiona/Florimel/Llewella

I don't actually care much about the men of the Chronicles. I'm interested in the story of the women. What motivates them? What are they doing? Not for their brothers, but for themselves. I want a story that revolves around them, not around the way they feel about the men.

I'm aware there are two cases of canon incestuous UST. Please feel free to deal with that or ignore it, as you wish, but if you deal with it, I would prefer that there be no explicitly adult material.

I asked for Deirdre, but if you decide to write something set post-Shadowfall (though I do prefer the first five books), then you may feel the need to exclude her, or only mention her instead. That's fine. I understand she got fridged, and dealing with it isn't always the easiest thing for a writer. As before, please feel free to include whatever other characters you need to tell the story.

I would definitely prefer gen for an Amber fic, but if you feel another genre would work best, then write what works for the story. Though, again, I am not fond of boyslash and would prefer you not write that, not even as a background pairing.

(This whole focus on female characters thing is going to ensure that I'll be paired up with the boyslashiest of authors who ever selected "any," isn't it?)

As always, I'm glad you signed up. Thank you for sharing your writing with us, and taking the time to write me a holiday gift!

Havoc
