I'm halfway through season one and I feel like I should be watching every episode at least three more times to catch all of the nuances.
They took the La Boheme trope and made Brona way more of a human being and less of a tragic figure on a pedestal. (I really did love Moulin Rouge, but Satine was definitely a tragic figure on a pedestal. Brona is definitely more of a human being who happens to be dying. (That's really going to suck.)
I didn't expect that one Ethan/Dorian night to happen. I suppose I should have, Dorian has sexual chemistry with, oh, everyone, which is apparently why he's slept with half the cast. But no one in this world seems to worry about syphilis? Seriously?
They killed off Van Helsing pretty fast. Wow. Shame, too, I liked that actor in all the Trek I've seen him in. He's one of the better Van Helsings I've seen. (The other Van Helsing I like best is Rutger Hauer's Van Helsing in Dario Argento's
Dracula 3D (which was not one of his better films, but Rutger Hauer was very good in it).
I can't believe it took me so long to realize that Vanessa is actually the protagonist of the whole series. I mean, I knew she was intimately involved, but I didn't realized she drove the action, or that her past tragedy (and demons and sins) caused everything. Also, wow, Anna Chancellor and Eva Green really do play well together. Clearly I need to see more of Eva Green's work; she seems to be one of those women who has a long, varied career ahead of her, and I hope so. I actually haven't seen her in anything before. I feel bad, but there's really only so much media I can watch.
The library wants their DVDs back soon, and this makes me very sad.
