26 & 27

26. The Diary by Eileen Goudge. I knew I'd have quite a bit on my plate between work and Good Friday activities so I picked a book that was short and sweet. I'll also add poignant to the list of adjectives.

27. No Way Down: Life and Death on K2 by Graham Bowley. Sometimes you look at a stack of books to be read and you wonder, which one? and why? This was easy as it was handed to me by my husband who doesn't always seem to be paying attention to what I read. Somewhere it registered - and maybe because it's kind of an anomaly - that I love to read books about climbing expeditions. However it happened I was truly delighted to have him place a book like this in my hands. And now the mood changes: No Way Down chronicles a tragic expedition to K2 in 2008 that resulted in the deaths of 12 climbers. Even the climbers know that the stats on K2 are not in anyone's favor but the mountains. Stat: Of the 70 men and women killed in the history of K2 up to 2008, one third of those were killed on the descent - so they reached the heights and then died. Not knowing which 12 made this an epic nailbiter and you find yourself rooting for the climbers as they push themselves beyond all limits to conquer this majestic, unforgiving, soaring slab of granite, rocks, ice and snow. Sad and riveting.

So now, which book is next? and why?
