“Hey, Alex!” One of the members of the drug ring that police detective Alex Gaskarth was deep undercover in approached him, smirking. “We captured a rat.”

“Oh?” Alex looked up from the money he had been counting, his heart skipping a beat as he saw Kyle Burns, his partner and lover, dragged into the room, bound and gagged.

“He’s a cop,” the man holding Kyle stated before throwing the boy to the ground, kicking him roughly in the stomach.

“No way.” Alex his part well, scowling at Kyle as he squatted down to inspect the captive. “Little shit…”

“Yeah, well we want you to deal with him,” the man said, walking over to Alex and whispering in his ear. “Find out what he knows and then waste him.” The man pressed a knife into Alex’s hand before beckoning for the others to follow him as he left the room.

“Jesus.” Alex fell to his knees beside Kyle, pulling the gag from his mouth. “Are you alright?” He made sure to keep his voice low.

“I’m fine.” Kyle nodded. “But we have to play along…”

“I know, but Ky, they want me to kill you…” he gulped, eyes wide.

“Yeah.” Kyle sighed. “I know.” He bit his lip. “Just say something - they might be listening, it has to seem like you’re hurting me.”

“You little fuck! Tell me what you know!” Alex shouted. “Everything!” Kyle followed the charade by letting out a loud cry of pain. “I have an idea,” Alex whispered, taking the knife and using it to cut Kyle free of the ropes binding him.

“Alex, what are you doing?” Kyle asked hurriedly, looking up at Alex.

“Letting you go,” Alex whispered.

“Lex, you can’t do that!” Kyle shook his head, lifting the ropes. “Tie me back up.”

“No.” Alex sighed. “Look, this investigation really needs you, okay? And I can’t kill you, I love you too much - beat me up, go to the back door, go to the left and there’s a straight shot out of here. I’ll tell them that you fought back, got away.”

“Alex, it’s too risky, I can’t-” Alex cut Kyle off, kissing him softly.

“You have to!” He whispered. “It’s the only way.”

“I don’t like this…” Kyle muttered.

“I know, but Ky, the other option is way worse. You need to stay alive, we can get them for abduction and attempted murder if you get back to the precinct alive - you know what that means.”

“This will all be over.” Kyle bit his lip. “You can come back to me.”

“Exactly.” Alex nodded. “Just do it - hurry.”

“God I hate this.” Kyle sighed, but jumped into action, hitting Alex in ways he knew would leave visible marks.

“Okay, now go!” Alex bit his lip as he picked up the knife. “Get out of here, baby.” Alex looked at Kyle, worry consuming him.

“It’s almost over,” Kyle whispered, leaning into kiss Alex.

“I know.” Alex sighed. “I love you, baby.”

“I love you too.” Kyle stole one last kiss before he took off in the direction Alex had instructed. Alex waited until he could no longer hear Kyle, then, with a loud scream of anguish, he drove the knife into his own shoulder.

“HELP!” Alex screamed, lying down on the ground. “He got loose! He fucking stabbed me! He’s getting away!”

Even as the men ran after Kyle, Alex knew that they wouldn’t catch him. Kyle was fast and smart - how he had gotten caught in the first place was completely unknown to Alex. When the men returned a few minutes later, claiming that Kyle had gotten away, Alex convincingly masked his relief behind rage - that had simply been too close.

TWO DAYS LATER

Alex watched as the members of the drug ring were led away in handcuffs. His shoulder was bandaged up, but it still hurt. The pain, however, was trumped by the relief and happiness he felt at finally being done with the job.

“Hey, slugger.” Kyle came up behind Alex, smiling.

“I hate it when you call me that…” Alex rolled his eyes, leaning against Kyle’s body, so glad for the renewed closeness.

“Well tough.” Kyle smiled. “You moving back in tonight?”

“A band of wild horses couldn’t stop me. I miss our bed.”

“It misses you too.” Kyle grinned. “I still can’t believe that you stabbed yourself…”

“I had to,” Alex stated. “It had to be believable and the bruises weren’t going to be enough - it was I stab myself somewhere that wouldn’t kill me, or they stab me somewhere that would…I chose the lesser of two evils.”

“You made the right choice.” Kyle smiled. “I’d die if anything happened to you.”

“That’s such a clichéd line…” Alex rolled his eyes again, but smiled in spite of himself. “But it means a lot anyways.”

“I know.” Kyle pulled Alex aside, placing his hand to the young man’s cheek., kissing him softly. “God, I was so scared that I Was going to lose you in there…”

“When I saw them bring you in - Kyle, if they had left you with anyone else, god…” Alex shuddered.

“It didn’t happen that way, don’t think about it,” Kyle whispered. “Come on, baby, let’s go home.”

“I’ve been waiting so long to hear those words…”

“I know.” Kyle put his arm around Alex. “I’ve been waiting just as long to say them.”
