"YOU TOOK IT APART SMARTY.
NOW YOU PUT IT BACK TOGETHER."

The Winchester's never lived normal lives. Despite how much Sam wanted to lead normalcy, Dean relished in the fact that they were genuine ghost hunters. He was following in the footsteps of their father; like the good son. Never disobeying, never asking questions, and always following. That's not the life Sam wanted.

By the time their dad saw he was old enough, Sam was out in the fields participating with his family in their nightly hunt for something that hungered on human flesh. And he hated it. Often, Sam would refuse his father's orders and leave the grounds, ignoring his dad's warnings that it could follow him. Most times, Sam would never even step foot outside of the motel they were staying in. Which is why he chose the latter after learning that his dad was right about it following him home.

Their father was a lot harder on Sam than Dean. Because of this, Sam felt everything was now a chore, unlike Dean who took everything in as training, and he would often get the scolding a disobeying son would hear. One night, while still in his teens, Sam bickered with their dad for a good ten minutes about not going on a hunt. In return, their dad handed him a gun and told him to take it apart and then reconfigure the parts. Anger in his eyes, Sam actually took the challenge.

When the two older members of the family returned to the motel and saw that the gun had only been partially put together and Sam asleep in one of the beds, their dad stormed over, woke Sam, and asked him why he hadn't finished. Sleepy, Sam responded that he needed help and then finally gave up. Yelling, he told Sam he was smart enough to put the gun back together himself and wouldn't let him go back to asleep until he finished.

Flustered, Sam got out of bed and stormed out the room. The following afternoon, Sam had returned, but no one said a thing to one another until the next day.
