Yesterday I went for a drive and interviewed a lovely woman about her time as a president for her local branch of the Good Neighbour Council. [In the 1950s the Australian Government funded the GNC to welcome and support new migrants. It was an era when assimilation was the main government policy, and historians have various opinions on the success or otherwise of the GNC.] It was a very interesting interview, she did some amazing things, including a lot of good work helping women in particular to settle in a strange new community. Throughout our talk though, she was at pains to tell me that ‘People were all very nice’ in her town. So often in oral history you get the feeling that some of the most interesting bits of the story are just under the surface, and will never be given to you!
