nobody has any issues with that does emma just do all the paperwork in the town herself with the number of crimes growing since she became sheriff you'd think she wouldn't have any time to sleep

For a program that makes me cringe with all the inaccuracies my home state’s geography/law/County Road system… this has to be one of the few things that Hollywood seems to have gotten right about Maine (well, for a couple of episodes… at least).

First off, there’s a reason why Emma isn’t losing sleep over handling every single crime… especially murder. SHE CAN’T BY LAW! Emma, in real-world Maine policing law, isn’t supposed to be handling murder cases as a town sheriff (actually she would be called a “chief constable”).

In all the county, and town, charters for the state of Maine (that’s right, sunshine… I read my town’s charter), the county police department handles any and all murders/suicides/accidental deaths, with help from the town level. Emma can help the county, but can’t… say, arrest anyone on a murder charge. Only a county officer can (which Emma is not).

Following tips on vandalized station wagons… she can do that. Arresting Mr. Gold on an assault racket… she can do that, too. Arresting Snow White on a meditated murder charge… that’s a no-go.
