New Sindel is not quite the evil harpy you thought of

As much as I've dabbled more into the realm of Mortal Kombat, the 9th game was a surprisingly good game. Of course, there's been some changes to the story, some real drastic ones at that. And who to suffer more than the former queen of Edenia, Sindel.

She's the brainwashed Queen of Edenia made to serve Shao Kahn after her resurrection. In the original timeline, with some help of Kitana, Sindel regained her senses and turned her back against Shao Kahn, bringing Edenia back to a peaceful rule and when Kitana got enslaved by the Dragon King, Sindel took action again and tried saving her land and her daughter. Pretty noble, don't you think?

Now in the rebooted timeline, Sindel, still a brainwashed queen of Shao Kahn, offered to step up the game after seeing Motaro taken out early, and then Shao Kahn responded by sacrificing Shang Tsung and imbued his many souls to Sindel, empowering her to a ridiculous extreme. What happened next was that she approached the heroes, killed about 10 of them rather easily, didn't even flinch from her brainwashing by Kitana and it took a heroic kamikaze attack by Nightwolf to take her out. Fans aren't pleased and started demonizing her, hating her and forgetting the decades of Sindel characterizations, even if those were rebooted.

Well here's my defense for the Queen:

1. Sindel has no controls of her actions

If you must know, the characterization from the previous timeline wasn't completely destroyed. Remember that Sindel's brainwashing here lasts longer and stronger, thus it's not like she had any control of murdering the heroes or the brainwashing would be easier to shrug off.

2. It was Shang Tsung's empowering that caused this

Yes, Sindel used all her skills to kill most heroes and many people said she wouldn't be able to do it normally. However, you must know that Shang Tsung got a lot of souls in disposal and this boosts Sindel's strength to absurd level, so I don't think it's fair to blame solely on Sindel when Shang Tsung's souls play a big part and Shao Kahn was the one offering the method. All Sindel wanted was to take on the battlefield, not necessarily "Shang Tsung, gimme your souls so I can kill the heroes."

3. The Arcade mode

You may start saying Arcade Mode isn't canon. However, it serves as a good place to explore the depths of the character. As of Sindel, it would portray anything but a cold, murdering bitch she's accused as. If the brainwashing and the empowering hadn't happened, Sindel's story in Arcade Mode would turn out like the original timeline, she regained her senses, turned against Shao Kahn and resumed being a noble, fair queen. Arcade Mode is better seen like the Story Mode of BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, while some are not canon, they would serve as shedding more depths to the character, and with that one shed depth of Sindel, I don't think it's fair to call her a murdering bitch.

Personally I am not a big fan of Sindel, but I see that the bashing she got was truly unfair. So I hoped that for the moment you guys don't totally just blame her and at least give her a chance to redeem herself. There's still next game! The noble queen hasn't turned into an evil harpy yet, it's still buried inside her so don't decide so rashly.
