Infinite amounts of word. Misa is one of my favorite characters in the series, and it makes me sad to know that she is inevitably bashed for being her.

One question, though: what do you mean 'despite her age'?

Well, when the series starts she's 19. Most people are not self-sufficient by that time. She would have to be, since she doesn't really have anyone else, and one usually does do her type of work when she does. But I'm impressed anyway. I'm nineteen and there's no way in hell I could be financially independent. (Then again, my parents became parents at that age, it's totally possible.)

I love Misa, yet reading I knew I'd find out she'd be bashed. Because she's female and goes for what she wants, partly. (Not that everyone thinks that way, but some people...)

(And yes, she does know Light is using her, even if she doesn't always acknowledge it.)

People bash Matsuda? But he's so cool. He's one of my favorite male characters in the series.

If Misa was a boy and Death Note were a yaoi series, everyone would call her "cute" instead of "dumb".
(do you know Gravitation? Then you'll know what I mean.)
Also, she "stands in the way" (as if!) for the OTP of many, many yaoi fangirls (you all know what I'm talking of - oh, and by the way, yes, I love that pairing, too).

Anyway, Misa-Misa is one of my favorite characters and I've loved her from the very first moment she appeared. Yes, she might be naive, but she's certainly not dumb. And while I don't support Light/Misa, I do think the fact she's able to love someone in such a selfless and self-sacrificing way is admirable, in one way or another.
I don't know, I've always thought "LIGHT, YOU TOTAL ASSHOLE" instead of "MISA, YOU DUMB WHORE". Now I don't hate Light either, he's one of my favorite characters, too, but there are some things we cannot deny ;) Well, rabid fangirls can, but I prefer not to associate myself with those.

Oh, and people bash Matsuda? How can that be? o__o

Yes, yes I did. And then I found this community way later, and realized it'd be a lot more appropriated here.

And yeah, I think the only way she'd do it is if Light asked her to, for strategic reasons. (Hell, I bet she could get some information out of L that way...) And even then I'm not sure if she'd do it.

It seems that because she's female and she has those qualities that she's bashed. As mentioned in the above comments, if she were a BOY then she'd be cute and awww, how adorable. But because she's a GIRL then no, that's not cute, it's bad :P I happen to like Misa as well and it's really sad and pathetic how people dump on her :\
