This isn't really prevelant, but a few scattered instances have me baffled.

In regards to an Avatar: The Last Airbender character named Mai, I've seen some fans balking at her inclusion.

Most of them, I find, have come from the Zutara (Zuko/Katara) fanbase. Now, I have nothing against this pairing. All pairings have a right to exist in any fandom. However, it does have little to no justification in canon, and I can see if the creators would want to take a different direction - which is what they seem to be doing with Mai, or at least, hinting that it might be one-sided on her part.

The thing is, it goes beyond that. There have been some assumptions made about Mai, mostly stemming from her role as an antagonist and as a friend of Azula. The thing is, when we were at this stage of knowing Zuko and Iroh's characters, they were, by all appearance, EQUALLY morally questionable characters. As time progressed, we learned they weren't half bad.

Now, Mai could turn out to be cut from the same cloth as Azula. Or she may not be. But can we get to KNOW certain characters before we decide what they're like, rather than judging them based on limited appearances?

female characters, crying "independent = bitch!", crying "antagonist = evil", avatar
