Category: Phantom of the Opera
Firstly, I haven't seen the new POTO film but I have read the novel and seen the musical. One thing that has been really bothering me is how many people out there hate Raoul. And when I mean hate, I mean HATE in such a way that only a fangirl can. Why is Raoul despised so?
1. the Phantom is so much better!
Honestly, despite his musical talent and knowledge of the operahouse, he's still quite intimidating and scary. Murdering and kidnapping people isn't exactly a nice habit, if you know what I mean.
2. Raoul is an idiot
Well, we can't all be smart and sensible can we? Raoul and Erik were both so much in love with Christine, and love can definitely make you do silly things. Christine herself was led on and yet allowed herself to be so. All three were inevitably tied by fate.
3. Raoul is a fop and a sissy
Pardon me for liking a gentleman, I obviously have my men wrong... somehow. The guy was born and raised as an aristocrat and you expect him to build palaces? It seems that everyone expects men born into privilage to be perfect and all-knowing, and heaven strike him down if he doesn't have a tragic past.

Is it so wrong for Christine to love Raoul, Erik, or even both? From the musical and novel, Christine believed that the Phantom was the Angel of Music that her late father told her about, and in a way, she perceived the Phantom to be both a father-figure and a dear friend. Christine and Raoul were both very much in love and in the final acts of the play, Christine would willingly give up her freedom if her fiance were to be spared from death.
The Phantom is no doubt a very alluring character, but he too has his flaws. He became obsessed with a woman whom he would do absolutely anything for, and took some very risky measures to ensure her successful career as an opera singer. Despite that, he still held a disdain for humankind and felt little (if not any) remorse for those he did murder without hesitation.
Christine was very privilaged to be associated with such two different - and yet similar - men. So, can we just lay off the hating and bitchin', please?
