Guess it's My Turn

Well, here goes.

Allen Schezar, Escaflowne -- This is an abbriviated form of a rant posted to fanficrants. Go to ff.net's Escaflowne section. I guarentee you that within a couple of pages you'll find at leats one Allen-bashing fic, or just portrayign him as a womanizing sleezeball. Why is he so picked on? We'll I'd say it's because:
1) He has a reputation for being a playboy, even in canon. He manages to knock up the Princes Marlene several years before the show starts, has Princess Millerna, Princess Marlene's youngest sister chasing after him (and he could be considered as leading her on), and is also chasing after the female lead, Hitomi Kanzaki.
2) He interferes with the true love of Hitomi and Van Fanel, the most popular pairing of Escafans.
However, Allen himself admits a lot of his protectiveness towards wowen comes form the fact his sister was missing and his mother died. I do think he geniunly cared for Marlene (hard to tell -- she died before the show started), and Millerna is a lot like her older sister -- enough that Allen might have wanted to transfer his feelings for Marlene to Millerna. Furthermore, Hitomi was also a young girl(about his sister's age) in need of protection. And, in the end, Allen doesn't end up with any of them. He DOES make his peace with his family, and finds his sister.

Celena Schezar, Escaflowne -- Celena isn't bashed as much of ignored, and that is because of one reason. Her past. See, in Escaflowne, Celena does have a lot of screen time, but not as herself. The sorcerors of Zaibach (the bad guys) made her the subject of experiments turning her into the (male, veyr attractive) psychopath Dilandau Albatou. And you give fangirls 20 episodes to get attached to a evil bishounen psychopath, and they will. When they find out he's a she, they tend to 'ignore' that little fact in their fanfics, and write happy Mary Sue AUs where Dilandau is just misunderstood, and not really a psychopath who only cares about fighting, revenge on Van, himself and his Dragonslayers.

Millerna, Escaflowne -- Another oft-bashed character -- I've actualyl gotten reviews on my fic that thank me for not bashing her. I think it's because she spends most of the series following Allen around like a puppy. However, she, too shows character strength. She eventually gives up on Allen once she dicovers her sister had a child by him, and marries Dryden, a merchant who is just head-over-heels in love with her. When Dryden leaves, determined to become a person he thinks she can love, Millerna refuses to have Allen even say anything to her by means of comfort -- she doesn't want to fall for him again.
She also breaks gender and class norms for her society by wearing pants occassionally and studying medicine. Which is neat.

Amelia wil Tesla Sailoon, Slayers -- Amelia is a sweet characters that far too many people hate. I trace it to the fatc she is perky and naive and fights for Justice and has a crush on the show's Designated Bishounen. Thing is, she does grow up a lot on the show... she goes from being willing to turn Lina and Gourry, her travelling companions, in when she sees them on a wanted poster, without being willing to hear their explanation that they were framed, to asking Lina not to tell her why Hellmaster Phibrizzo kidnapped Gourry, because she's afraid knowing will force her to choose between her friends and her code of honor.

Gourry Gabriev, Slayers -- He's not as dumb as he looks, honest. Gourry might not be the brightest crayon in the box, but he did suvive quite well on his own, without Lina or someone to think for him. Furthermore, he was the only person to figure out Xellos wasn't human before it became quite obvious. Furhtermore, swordmanship is more than sticking the pointy end at the enemy -- there is strategy and tactics and a complete idiot cannot learn these. Gourry is far too good with a sword to be a complete idiot. He can just afford to let Lina handle the magic and the money bits -- she's intelligent enough for the both of them.

I think that's it. I'd say somethign about Lord of the Rings (another big fandom of mine), but 90% of the fanfic for that terrifies me.

slayers, escaflowne
