Hello, rainjewel here. I have just joined this group. Brilliant, I think, simply brilliant. I might have hated a character or two in the past, but slowly I matured and realized that no matter how much I didn't like one character, they are necessary to the development of the anime/tv show/movie/book/what have you, and that they shape those around them. Every character has something to contribute. Course, I still have a few biases...
For those who care, I am interested in mainly anime. I adore Escaflowne, Digimon 01/02, Gundam Wing, Slayers, Trigun, Evangelion, and Sailor Moon to a certain degree. Movie/TV wise you'll catch me watching even more cartoons and anything concerning Johnny Depp.
That said, I should probably list the characters I defend and the select few I just can't back up.
Those I like:
Relena Dorlian/Peacecraft (Gundam Wing): Yeah, the hypocritical name switching gets old after awhile, but Relena packs a punch. She carries an immense amount of responsibility upon her back, and she has balls. A country run on an ideal of absolute pacificism is a hard thing to get people to rally behind, and yet she does. She is a startlingly adept diplomat. Sure, she can't fight for shit, but that's what Heero is for. And coming from a hard-hitting 1x2x1 shipper, I don't say this lightly--Heero needs Relena. He needs what she stands for. All the pilots need her to bring the world to peace once their war is finished.
Amelia Tesla wil Seyruun (Slayers): Please correct our fave Justice Freak's name if I've fluffed it again. Amelia has the biggest heart of anyone in the Slayers group and she's needed desperately (this coming from a serious Zel fangirl). Gourry is a lot like her, but...well...he's a touch slow. And we love him. But Amelia is the girl who manages to get along with most everyone they meet and always tries to keep her comrades spirits up. And she really does work well with Zel, which hurts my little Z/L heart, but that's a rant for another day.
Millerna Sara Aston (Tenkuu No Escaflowne): To simply label Millerna as a barbie princess will really, really piss me off. She lives in a highly structured society and is set to inherit the throne, yet she rebels as much as she can. She continues her studies of medicine despite her family's grumblings (dude, she does surgery out of a book. That takes guts). She shirks tradition and wears pants. She defied her father in order to try and save the Duchy of Freid (a character I really cannot defend at all. Grr.). Millerna rocks.
Those I dislike:
Derringer Meryl (Trigun): This woman's motto is "Do not deal with anything. Ever. Deny, deny, deny." She cannot handle any situation that comes her way whatsoever. She drives me up a wall. As for being paired with Vash...no way. He needs someone who can handle things, considering his lifestyle. Remember the scene where Vash is screaming in emotional agony and Meryl leaves the room, because she can't deal with it? The series gains nothing from her.
Kikyo (Inu Yasha): I really liked the old Kikyo. I really did. I like the idea of Inu Yasha paired with old Kikyo. Reincarnated Kikyo makes little to no sense to me. If she truly loved Inu Yasha, why the hell is she so hell bent on killing him? I can't remember if she learns about the situation regarding her own death/ Inu Yasha's betrayal, but even if she hadn't, once this had been explained she should really leave him the hell alone. With this character I'm rather open on debate. She doesn't do much for me.
Avril Lavigne (Poser): I know she's a real person, but let it be known to all that nothing could make me happier than Avril Lavigne's head in a jar on my desk. Meryl I can somewhat tolerate, and Kikyo isn't to hard to take. I see red whenever I hear anything about Avril Lavigne.
I hope to get some good discussions going. Thanks!
