oh yes, now list your favorite non metal (or punk or industrial) albums, TOP 10.
And you know, I was wondering these things BEFORE I LEARNED THAT VH1 STARTED WITH THE LIST FRENZY, for the record. My problem with watching VH1 shows like this is that they center on the 80s when it comes to metal, and well, pretty much EVERYTHING. Not just 80s metal either, 80s HAIR METAL. The worst metal song ever was....EUROPE - THE FINAL COUNTDOWN. (I actually found a cover of this song by a shitty Gothenburg DM band called Dispatched). Now believe it or not, despite the fact that I like to pride myself on my eclectic tastes, and expansive knowledge of all sorts of music, I had never heard that song....until right then. Now, with all of the shit out there (GWAR - FUCKING AN ANIMAL, MEAT SANDWICH, UHH EVERYTHING), they pick a band that is barely known in metal, and a song that is barely known in metal. I didn't even know a few of the obscure 80s bands they listed. And not to defend 80s hair metal, but just because a band puts out a BALLAD, doesn't mean that it is a bad song. Case in point, Queensryche's Silent Lucidity...which, by the way, is a single off of their best album that still gets relatively frequent radioplay. Now, I'm not crazy about the song, but it is not a bad song, or even a completely unmetal song. The list was not consistant. Is this the LEAST METAL songs ever? Or is it the WORST ACTUALLY METAL SONGS ever?
And what cracks me up is that they have commentaries by people who appear as though the most metal song they've heard is Hot For Teacher. And that's right after they play it for them in the studio. Occassionally they have the VH1 metalhead regulars, Henry Rollins and Scott Ian. I'm not much of a fan of either's bands, but they seem to know what they're talking about most of the time. Big fish in a little pond. It says something about your career when you've spent more hours on VH1 than number of copies that your latest album sold.
And the very best part of the show is when they have someone like...uhhh...Katie Couric or some wiseass comedian on some shitty sitcom tell us how terrible a Stryper or Creed song is....and proceed to tell us that 'metal isn't about love and rainbows and being a good parent....it's about sex, drugs, and....
SATAN!
Oh yeah, and I know you've all been watching it. I KNOW. Maybe.
The Cure - Disintegration, is decidedly my favorite Cure album.
David Bowie - Outside
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Let Love In
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - From Her To Eternity
Ministry - The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste, the last Ministry album I count as being not metal, although it has metal elements, and songs that, played live, are quite metal...but on this record, the production is very old-school industrial, ala Revolting Cocks and early Skinny Puppy...
On second thought, Ministry doesn't count as mine, since I don't think I want to include industrial on this either.
I'll just put half of them for now. I'm digging deep for the other ones.
