New Year's Resolution

Jan 15, 2011 22:25

A bit late, to be sure, but my New Year's Resolution for this year is two-fold: to read one Lovecraft story per month, and also one book for leisure per month.

I've not read my Lovecraft story, and I will generally not review those stories here, as Lovecraft is a staple of most of my friends. But I will go ahead and review the other books I read.

I earlier reviewed H. P. Lovecraft's Book of Horror, and it can be found in my last entry. Tonight, I will review The Prometheus Project Book One: Trapped!, by Douglas E. Richards.

The book is a Young Adult novel, to be sure, and only spans about 175 pages, so it's a short read. The characters are about as developed as one might expect in a YA novel - perhaps a tad more than most - and it handles fairly adult themes well (though the world certainly functions just like a YA universe would in terms of punishment, etc.), such as death, weaponry, and danger.

What really stands out about Trapped!, though, is its handling of science; almost all the science in the book is explained using fairly simple concepts to those of us who've passed high school biology; but it serves as a way for younger audiences to learn more about how the world works, scientifically. Covering subjects as simple as gravity - and the understanding that all objects fall at the same speed - to those as complex as cellular growth and the immune system.

All-in-all, if you're past the age of twenty-five, you likely have no use for the simple science in the book, but if you're looking for a fun ride into science-fiction, or trying to find a way to teach a younger audience more about the science of our world, this book is a fairly capable introduction.
