Ninja Classifications & Rankings.
This sort of stuff helps others, unfamiliar with the Naruto World, where exactly Kabuto (and any others that may show up), are placed in that universe, as well as help them understand the Universe in itself.
» Ninja Rankings are as follows:
.....¤ Academy student Not officially considered a Shinobi.
.....¤ Genin Graduate Academy. Are able to perform basic skills and work on a team of four. One Jounin and three Genin. Perform D and sometimes C rank missions.
.....¤ Chuunin Must pass the Chuunin exam. They show leadership qualities. Can perform C-B rank missions.
.....¤ Jounin Appointed. Highly experienced Ninja with the ability to serve as a military captain. Can perform any rank mission.
..........▫ Tokubetsu Jonin Usually has a specified skill. IE: Interrogation.
.....¤ Kage Appointed by previous Kage or Council. -- Each of the five countries have one. Single most powerful Shinobi in the country.
..........▫ Sannin Legendary Status. Only obtained by Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Tsunade. Title given by Sandaime.

.....¤ Apprentice Receives special training from someone of a higher ranking.
.....¤ S-Class Beyond the level of a Jounin. A class - not a ranking. Jounin are often found running from them. May not have ever obtained a ranking. Comparable to a 'Kage' ranking.
.....¤ Medical-nin Specialized training in Medical jutsu and treatment. Usually combat with Taijutsu, and are trained to evade. If they die, it could mean the destruction of an entire team.
.....¤ Missing-nin Ninjas who have abandoned their village and are considered dangerous for knowing some of the secrets of that village.
..........▫ Akatsuki A group initially made up of ten S-Ranking criminals. Though their numbers have dwindled recently, and Orochimaru left the group several years prior to the series start.
.....¤ ANBU Ansatsu Senjutsu Tokushu Butai "Special Assassination and Tactical Squad". They go on exceptionally difficult missions.
..........▫ Root To quote their motto "In Root... there are no names. There are no feelings...There is no past... there is no future. There is only the mission...The will of us Roots supports this great tree called Konoha, invisible, from within the earth."
.....¤ Hunter-nin Shinobi who are given the special duty of hunting down Missing Nin.
» So what is Kabuto?
.....¤ Apprentice
..........▫ Served under Akasuna no Sasori of the Akatsuki. May have received some training. - Unsure about this, hasn't been totally covered.
..........▫ Trained under Orochimaru.
.....¤ Medic-Nin
..........▫ Kabuto's adopted parents, primarily his father, trained him from a young age in this; he's a known prodigy.
..........▫ His skills, Tsunade comments, are superior to hers when she was in her prime.
.....¤ Missing-Nin
..........▫ Kabuto's allegiance is something no one is still sure of.
..........▫ He started as a citizen of Konoha, then worked under Akatsuki, and then Orochimaru.
..........▫ Being that Orochimaru is dead, his allegiance is nowhere.
.....¤ Jounin
..........▫ Kabuto has no official ranking in the canon. However, this is what his level is compared to.
..........▫ He's known to have an easy time taking down ANBU, so is not to be underestimated.
..........▫ He's also held his own against Tsunade for decent amounts of time. He fights dirty, though XD
