Oscars 2008 - Wasn't that a show and a party.

So we had Italian Meatballs in Miss Diana Sauce, pickles, veggies and dip, cream cheese and crackers by me, a cheese dip with baguette bread brought by eleryth, some home made bread with nuts and raisins by mriswith, pop by nessun, and a lovely chocolate cake with strawberry cream cheese icing by sariannastar.

The red carpet was pretty good over all. I Had a 5 Second Delay Moment when I said the hairdressing people must be on strike. mriswith said that already. We all agreed that Cameron Diaz looked liked she put no effort this year. Dame Helen Mirren looked fabulous. Most people looked good. We watched the ETalk red carpet show and watched Jeanne Beker make quite a few gaffes. Vigggo Mortensen looked very scruffy with his beard but I think I know why - he's doing The Road. All in all it was a good red carpet pre-show to keep us busy while we ate.

Most categories were not surprises to most people, especially if you read the NY Times. I am so glad a decent song won this year. "Falling Slowly" is delightful and I hope to here it more. The Coen brothers wisely said all they had to say on their two previous trips to the podium and left Scott Rudin to do the acceptance speech for best movie. Javier Bardem was sweet considering the role he played. Tilda Swinton looked she was not ready to give a speech at all so was a little all over the place but was most gracious to George Clooney. Marion Cotillard was a delight, you tell she did not expect to win at all. And Daniel Day-Lewis was probably the most poetic of the lot. And who knew The Bourne Ultimatum would win all those technical awards.

Best moments are best summoned by the host saying what the audience talks about the audience at home's tacky clothes during commercial breaks and playing Wii with the little girl from the choir.

"In case you're wondering what we all do here during the commercial breaks, mostly we just sit around making catty remarks about the outfits you're all wearing at home
Presenter Jon Stewart on advertisement breaks"

I think they need more writer's strikes because this was probably the better show in a long time because they did some good montages and kept the politics to a minimum. And it ended 10 minutes early!

And here's a link for the best bon mots.

"Seeing you climb into that rubber batsuit from Batman and Robin - the one with the nipples - every morning under your costume, on the set, off the set, hanging upside down at lunch. You rock, man ..."
Best supporting actress Tilda Swinton thanks co-star George Clooney, in her winner's speech, for providing light relief during the filming of Michael Clayton."
