INSULTING THE STATES:

TEXAS:

This State is one of two former independent nations to become part of the United States after the first thirteen, the other being Hawaii*. Texans take some pride in their independence, which they gave up so as to have the United States defend them against attacks by Mexico.

Texas was settled by Americans invited into the relatively unsettled area to provide it with the prosperity Americans were producing. They were soon subjected to persecution for, basically, acting like Americans, and seceded from Mexico, claiming all the lands where any Americans had settled. After joining the United States, Texas ceded about a third of its territory: basically all the portion of the Texas Republic which contained gold, silver, or regular rainfall.

When an Abolitionist President was elected, Texas chose to secede from the nation it depended on for its defense. Secessionists in legislature demanded a loyalty oath from government officials, to demonstrate their good faith as oathbreakers.

I swear I'm not making this up.

(*People from Vermont and California also like to pretend.)
