Act II; Week I

May 03, 2012 20:05

#1- Thank you so much, violet_eyes for not only putting out a survey, but taking the time to type it and send it to me. It was regarding how British school boys felt about American accents, and it was both hilarious and fascinating. With the prevalence of American TV and movies, I never would've guessed that they'd latch on to the stereotypical Southern one. That's hilarious.

#2- Death School So Far

We're in a new classroom with impossibly bright lights and we (Class C.D, those of us who started in January, since we didn't have to take all of the college-required classes) have been merged with class LM (the ones who either came in right from High School- about four or five of them- or otherwise had never been to college). They're not half bad, but I miss the days when the teachers would tell us about how we were "the good class".

They're incredibly loud and chatty, though. A lot of people who like to sit directly behind me and mutter commentary with the lecture. "Mm-hmm.", "Yeah, uh-hu", "Right, right", muttering what they think is going to be said, and my particular least favorite, a noise of disbelief/scoffing/yeah right that is spelled "Huh" but doesn't sound that way. I really hate that noise. You hear it a lot if you travel in, erm... ethnic circles. What? You do! I can see most of the People of Color on my FList nodding. They know the noise I'm talking about. It's not a very nice noise, especially when it's being directed at you.

I got really annoyed today when I literally raised my hand seven times to ask a question only to have someone scream out a question before the professor could even look at me.

Actual Classes So Far:

Accounting
I don't think I have a clue as to what's going on in this class, but when I asked, neither does anyone else. Maybe it was because it was the first day and I was already feeling antsy from the new lights, room, and energy, but part of me kept feeling that I'd have learned this stuff better in our old group where people weren't shouting out to finish the instructor's sentences.

Clinical Embalming begins next week. We're in tiny groups of seven or eight. I don't know anyone in my group, but I won't have that luxury for long.

Microbiology For Embalmers
This is alllllll dictation and note taking, and it's boring as Hell. Doctor MicroBio said herself that it would be a boring class and that she'd be giving us a test every week because "if I had to stand up here for three hours dictating this, I'd kill myself. (Class laughs, her face stays stricken) I'm serious." Fully Licensed reapers have great senses of humor. :3

Color and Cosmology
Imagine this: A family wants out a nice wood casket with a lovely green interior.
Funeral Director: Ok... what did you plan on having mom wearing?
Family: *Presents us with mom's favorite bright orange dress*
Funeral Director: Y-eeeeah, let's lay that in the casket and see how it looks...

It's interesting in that we're going to be learning not only how to put makeup on a corpse, but we're also learning about lighting, wallpaper, and carpeting. We have to, because in that scenario up there? The family will totally blame us if mom looks terrible because of that color scheme. We have to show them first. Most people aren't really thinking about that sort of thing. That's ok; that's what they train us, the Li'l Reapers, to do.

The teacher Coffee handed out the syllabus and went over how we'll have weekly tests and quizzes, and if we miss a test we can't make it up. Tuesday was a bad day, though, and we all felt i. It dragged so badly that I came very, very close to rasing my hand and doing this-

Harp: What's our quiz going to be on after week 7?
Teacher: Cosmetics.
Harp: But I thought you said there's be no Makeup tests *Trollface*"

(Class: *Poker face*
Harp: *Poker face*
Teacher: *Poker face* ... GTFO.

Anatomy II
Bones are pretty easy, and Prof D makes it easy, too. She believes in using the Latin to help us learn, which is just fantastic for me.

Introduction to Chemistry
Not as bad as I expected. The first thing we were told to do is memorize 25 elements, their valences, and their classes. Once I learned what that those numbers were valences, suddenly, forming compounds just made sense. "Oh! I see! You have to make it even on both sides!" Unless I have it totally wrong.

Anyhow, I really like the teacher so far. Miles better than the one in High School.

Introduction to Pathology
Another lecture class, and to be honest, it's been such A Week that I don't have the energy to think about how to describe it. Tomorrow is Embalming and then Merchandising. I really, really plan on having a good study this week-end, but I don't know how well that'll go.

P.S- when I got home, this was waiting for me right beside my door. It startled me a little, but I got a picture. Wonder what kind it is.
