Below is listed every single completed SSHG story I could find between 10,000 and 40,001 words posted between July 21, 2007 and July 21, 2008. I don’t mean to exclude any author or story, so if you know of a completed SSHG novella that was posted during the first year of the post-DH era not listed here, let me know.
I put a star next to the ones I personally liked (I tried all below) and otherwise noted those recognized by awards and rec sites like Quill to Parchment (QtP), Know It Alls (KIA) and crack_broom, as well as the sshg_awards to highlight those that you might find worthwhile checking out.

As far as I’m concerned, if you’re looking for the “real loot” in post-DH SSHG-look no further. This by and large is where you will find the best written stories, the most imaginative, the most varied.
These stories show the different approaches taken to Deathly Hallows canon:
1) Ignore it. (or go alternate universe, which ignoring it is taken to be, but not quite) A true AU in the sci-fi sense doesn’t ignore canon, or what canon reveals about character and backstory, just forks off, or asks what if? and goes a different road. A good Alternate Universe story very much depends on canon. In the case of carpetfibers’ lyrical NABOKOV REVISITED: a full circle, the story is a sequel to an Order of the Phoenix-era story of hers, so is forced to ignore canon, as does Missile Envy’s It’s Not That Simple posted right after DH but written before. In the powerful horror story by death_ofme, Wasting Away, the story could almost be EWE, other than a few things like a mention of the twins being alive, but is so AU in feel it feels like a true-branch off. The one true AU I starred on this list is apollinav’s, hilarious Plan B. Otherwise, the closest to a real AU with a true fork-off on this list I starred is Leraiv Snape’s Unrequited.
Few stories that ignore canon completely are good imo (and yes, I do try them, not just write them off) because they tend to be wildly out of any range of possible characterization or plausibility. The lack of interest in examining or capturing who Snape and Hermione are, or using canon to show who they might be, shows, and that route was unheard of in the ship pre-Half-Blood Prince. In my opinion many a pre-HBP story feels more in character and works better even now, than post-HBP stories that choose to ignore canon. Obviously though, many, many fangirls disagree with me. Ignoring DH (and even HBP) is a very popular way to go, accounting for about half of all postDH stories in the ship, including many of the most squeed ones. And occasionally, even I find a story of this sort that has its charms, like littlelizzyann’s Phlebotonum
2) Go EWE! Canon compliant but ignore the epilogue. Epilogue? What Epilogue? (and here I’d include those stories that in a sense are canon-compliant by one way of looking at the epilogue, but make Rose and Hugo not Hermione’s children.) A lot of EWE stories are my favorite SSHG fics of the year. I found death_ofme’s Pomegranate Seeds surreal and freakin’ gorgeous. About the only other novella I thought matched it for sheer imagination was mundungus42’s The Room of Lost Dreams. Great adventures and settings were found in sshg316’s The Long Way Home, wonderfulwrites’ Some Places Speak Distinctly, or Have Snape, Will Travel and bluestocking79’s The French Connection. Both hayseed_42’s Seven Habits of Highly Hateful People and camillo1978’s Good as Gold was hilarious, Kailin’s Doing Time With Hermione Granger wonderfully warm and shiv5468 and warded_portal’s Restrictive Covenants witty and erotic at once.
3) Go fully canon-Rowling-compliant down to the epilogue, and then bravely continue on. Together, oyster_district’s Engineered Collisions, dickgloucester’s Through Silence, silburygirl’s The Burdens of Being Functional and Illusory, leni_jess’s Witch's Sabbatical and chazpure’s The Headmaster’s Teas all show the potential in exploring Hermione as a mother to Rose and Hugo, or using them as characters and/or Hermione’s marriage to Ron as a foil to her relationship to Snape. I like the mature Hermione you usually see in these fics.
So much here I thoroughly enjoyed and admired.
I'd also point out, that of the 78 stories on this post, 41 of them came from the sshg_exchange and 12 out of the 19 starred. I think several of the authors above might not be writing in the ship at all without the exchange. Oh, and three of the fics starred above were from two other (multi-ship) exchanges, wizard_love, and smutty_claus. That means only four of those starred were inspired independently, and one of those was inspired by the author asking for challenges on her LJ.
Not sure what that means. But then, a whole lot of the best stories in the ship were once inspired by WIKTT Challenges. Hayseed's Getting the Hang of Thursdays (Time-loop); Theastrem's Chaos Is Come Again, WendyNat's Cloak of Courage Blood's Tyger (Marriage Law); Abby and Domina's Fire and the Rose and FriendlyQuark's A Terrible Temptation (Different switching bodies challenges); TheGreyLady's Mephistopheles (Hollow Man Challenge). I can't remember the last time a WIKTT Challenge has been influential that way. Different challenge coms seem to have stepped into the gap.
I searched through FanfictionNet, AdultFanfiction, The Archive at the End of the Universe, Skyehawke, Fiction Alley, Restricted Section, Granger Enchanted, WIKTT Archives, Ashwinder, The Petulant Poetess, OWL, Digital Quill and the sshg_exchange.

I don’t mean to exclude any author or story, so if you know of a completed SSHG novella that was posted during the first year of the post-DH era not listed here, let me know.

As far as I’m concerned, if you’re looking for the “real loot” in post-DH SSHG-look no further. This by and large is where you will find the best written stories, the most imaginative, the most varied.
These stories show the different approaches taken to Deathly Hallows canon:
1) Ignore it. (or go alternate universe, which ignoring it is taken to be, but not quite) A true AU in the sci-fi sense doesn’t ignore canon, or what canon reveals about character and backstory, just forks off, or asks what if? and goes a different road. A good Alternate Universe story very much depends on canon. In the case of carpetfibers’ lyrical NABOKOV REVISITED: a full circle, the story is a sequel to an Order of the Phoenix-era story of hers, so is forced to ignore canon, as does Missile Envy’s It’s Not That Simple posted right after DH but written before. In the powerful horror story by death_ofme, Wasting Away, the story could almost be EWE, other than a few things like a mention of the twins being alive, but is so AU in feel it feels like a true-branch off. The one true AU I starred on this list is apollinav’s, hilarious Plan B. Otherwise, the closest to a real AU with a true fork-off on this list I starred is Leraiv Snape’s Unrequited.
Few stories that ignore canon completely are good imo (and yes, I do try them, not just write them off) because they tend to be wildly out of any range of possible characterization or plausibility. The lack of interest in examining or capturing who Snape and Hermione are, or using canon to show who they might be, shows, and that route was unheard of in the ship pre-Half-Blood Prince. In my opinion many a pre-HBP story feels more in character and works better even now, than post-HBP stories that choose to ignore canon. Obviously though, many, many fangirls disagree with me. Ignoring DH (and even HBP) is a very popular way to go, accounting for about half of all postDH stories in the ship, including many of the most squeed ones. And occasionally, even I find a story of this sort that has its charms, like littlelizzyann’s Phlebotonum
2) Go EWE! Canon compliant but ignore the epilogue. Epilogue? What Epilogue? (and here I’d include those stories that in a sense are canon-compliant by one way of looking at the epilogue, but make Rose and Hugo not Hermione’s children.) A lot of EWE stories are my favorite SSHG fics of the year. I found death_ofme’s Pomegranate Seeds surreal and freakin’ gorgeous. About the only other novella I thought matched it for sheer imagination was mundungus42’s The Room of Lost Dreams. Great adventures and settings were found in sshg316’s The Long Way Home, wonderfulwrites’ Some Places Speak Distinctly, or Have Snape, Will Travel and bluestocking79’s The French Connection. Both hayseed_42’s Seven Habits of Highly Hateful People and camillo1978’s Good as Gold was hilarious, Kailin’s Doing Time With Hermione Granger wonderfully warm and shiv5468 and warded_portal’s Restrictive Covenants witty and erotic at once.
3) Go fully canon-Rowling-compliant down to the epilogue, and then bravely continue on. Together, oyster_district’s Engineered Collisions, dickgloucester’s Through Silence, silburygirl’s The Burdens of Being Functional and Illusory, leni_jess’s Witch's Sabbatical and chazpure’s The Headmaster’s Teas all show the potential in exploring Hermione as a mother to Rose and Hugo, or using them as characters and/or Hermione’s marriage to Ron as a foil to her relationship to Snape. I like the mature Hermione you usually see in these fics.
So much here I thoroughly enjoyed and admired.
I'd also point out, that of the 78 stories on this post, 41 of them came from the sshg_exchange and 12 out of the 19 starred. I think several of the authors above might not be writing in the ship at all without the exchange. Oh, and three of the fics starred above were from two other (multi-ship) exchanges, wizard_love, and smutty_claus. That means only four of those starred were inspired independently, and one of those was inspired by the author asking for challenges on her LJ.
Not sure what that means. But then, a whole lot of the best stories in the ship were once inspired by WIKTT Challenges. Hayseed's Getting the Hang of Thursdays (Time-loop); Theastrem's Chaos Is Come Again, WendyNat's Cloak of Courage Blood's Tyger (Marriage Law); Abby and Domina's Fire and the Rose and FriendlyQuark's A Terrible Temptation (Different switching bodies challenges); TheGreyLady's Mephistopheles (Hollow Man Challenge). I can't remember the last time a WIKTT Challenge has been influential that way. Different challenge coms seem to have stepped into the gap.
