Macs can theoretically get viruses but I have never seen one and certainly the few viruses that can infect Macs have been spread through........ downloads of pirated software. It's nothing like the Windows ecosystem where you can get infected by visiting a random site.
If your HP printer has a USB cable, it almost certainly will work with your Mac... and even better, it'll probably work without installing any drivers because OS X comes with a lot of drivers by default.
You can always install Windows via Boot Camp and dual boot to use your Windows software....
*"I have never seen one" = I did tech support for all 4 years at Princeton and then have been unofficial tech support in my lab for the last 3 years....
And I've been working on Macs since the late '90s (publishing industry) and have never, ever gotten a virus, whether on a work computer or a home computer.
I've used Macs for longer than there's been the WWW. (God, that makes me feel old.) I have seen a virus. Once. Circa ~1997 or so. And the OS-installed security software took care of it and let me know after.
Well, took the plunge, am already back online, and am in love. Might be because this is the latest iMac, and it's been 8 years since my last PC--things i'm sure have improved. But this is already making me feel like PCs in comparison are piles of crap.
I'm just in love with how the computer is *in* the viewscreen and the keyboard and mouse are wireless. No wires. No rats nest of them--no tower cramping my feet. *gushes*
