Goal #19, Do a sprint triathlon

Aug 18, 2012 17:36

At home sick, trying to catch up on my goal list. I did a sprint triathlon last Saturday, and got my first tri medal! It was my first open-water swim too, which was harder than in a pool but not as hard as I expected. The bike route was nice but hilly; most of the hills weren't bad but there was one murderous one, probably about a mile long, and very close to the top I finally had to get off and walk. But after that was over a mile straight of steep downhill - I got up to 32 miles an hour! It was exhilarating (and terrifying). I passed one of those "YOUR SPEED: --" signs and I made it blink. I was speeding. Awesome.

It's been almost two years since I did a tri, and I could tell when I was doing it. The transitions were hard - even when you're conserving energy for the next leg, it's hard to jump off a bike after fourteen (difficult) miles and just start running. And swimming in open water, jumping right out, putting on a pair of shoes and hopping on a bike. That transition is harder than you'd expect, and I could feel that I hadn't done it in a while. But I got a good time, got a pretty good speed. My time was 2:09, and I know my best tri time was 1:50-something, and this bike route was 14 miles instead of 12, and the swim was 500 yds instead of 400, so I think I'm about on track time-wise.

Now there are only two athletic activities left on my first list - the Olympic triathlon, and the half-Iron Man. Not gonna lie, I'm not sure the half-Iron Man is going to happen by next October. But the Olympic one I think is set - there's a Dino Tri in Vernal in June that we almost did this year, that's Olympic distance. That's gotta be the one. The medal has a dinosaur on it. End of discussion. As for the half-Iron Man, well, since I've got a second list, I can always swap out goals between them with one I can do by October. The ol' switcheroo, yeaaaaah!
