THE UNMEANT
It's not like she means for it to happen.
And she's pretty sure he doesn't mean for it too.
It just kinda does.
It just kinda builds up.
Then he touches her and she's knows: too far, too far. This isn't what was supposed to happen. This wasn't… Was this even meant to happen? But then Kaldur's hands are calloused and heavy on her back. His breath is thick by her ear. He tells her to breath. Artemis does.
The water doesn't stick in her throat.
"It's Atlantean magic," his voice vibrates against her skin. It ripples the water.
Artemis gulps water. It feels like air.
"Thank you," she says, her mouth tastes the salt of the water. Somewhere above her the breather is floating to the surface. It's too far to care about now. Useless. Kaldur swims to her front. Artemis moves her arms in the water still holding her down. She's not sure what he did, what he used, but now she's able to breath and somewhere under them their attackers lie unconscious.
"It's a simple magic; it will not last forever."
She smiles, "It's lasting long enough."
Kaldur's lip twitch.
"What is it?"
"You are sharing my abilities- I've linked my life force and Atlantean skills too you." Kaldur explains.
Artemis sucks in a breath.
"It is only temporary."
She thinks to about three minutes ago when she had been gasping for breath and Kaldur swam up behind her, pulling her body flush to his. His palm pressing against her heart and murmured something. How in the moment everything had grown hot and then too cool and suddenly she could breath again.
Magic.
This really doesn't help her crush.
Like at all. It's bad enough she know she likes him and doesn't always know she likes someone else, but then he does something like this and she's breathing because of him.
Artemis smiles. Hopefully the water hides some of her blush. "Still. You- Thank you."
He only nods to her.
Before she can say anything else she hear M'gann call out them and then hears Kaldur answer. She can't think of anything to say for second and then he's holding his hand out and tugs her back to the ship. Artemis shakes her head and starts swimming steadily next him. Reassures the mental worries that the rest of the team send her way.
Once they reach the ship, Kaldur - the stronger swimmer - waits by the opening M'gann gives them and Artemis sucks in one last breath and kisses his cheek before heading in. She watches Kaldur blink, his eyes widening as he looks at her, and grins.
Sometimes she likes taking people by surprise too.
