picspam: Sailor Moon!

For picspammy's challenge 13: spam something you've never spammed before. The first thing that popped into my mind was "Sailor Moon!". I think maybe there's about two people on my flist even know I watched it, so it was safe to assume I never spammed it before and I've been wanting to for ages. This gave me the perfect excuse.

Oh, Sailor Moon! I still remember when I first met you and I've loved you since. For always, it looks like. I was first introduced to the wonderfulness of this anime, when I was about 7/8 and let me tell you, to me, it was amazing. And? It hasn't stopped being amazing for me. This was my first fandom before I even knew what fandom was! I actually caught my first episode by mistake. It was sandwiched between Ronin Warriors and Dragonball back in the day on UPN. My brother watched them and then one morning I sat down and by the first 10 seconds of the opening, I was mesmerised. Hooked. This show spoke to my seven year old self. *fist pump*

I loved the characters so much. I wanted to be these girls and have friends like these girls, becuase even though they were kickass soliders and princesses, they were also the most amazing bunch of friends ever. They weren't pefect -- hell, Usagi? Perfect? hahahaha! -- but they were wonderful. All of them had flaws, and even more strength than they knew at the time, and together they saved the world and each other from the ages of 14 to forever! (I'm serious, they like live to be 1000 years old or something by the end. They have great genetics.)

And while the love story between Usagi and Mamoru is a big plot line in the first (and, arguably, the second) season, this show wasn't about them and their epic love. Not really, and let's face it, Mamoru? Usually useless, but as Usagi's prince and resident rose thrower, he's there a lot, but more often than not they had to save him from well, everyone. (I mean it, every season, he dies/needs to be save by the girls. It's hilarious and awesome.)

Not to mention the girls themselves. At first they are portrayed as their stereotypes -- the goof, the genius, the tomboy, the diva, the pretty one -- but as the series goes on you see they're so much more than that. For an anime mostly aimed at young kids the show brings out a surprising amount of layers for each character. And this isn't even mentioning the Outer scouts, who are even more complex than the anime touched upon. Two of my favourites: Michiru/Neptune and Haruka/Uranus? One of the first (as far as I know) openly gay couple in an anime. This made for an interesting issue when the English versions came out, and one of the main reason there was such a wait between season 2 and 3 in the US as far as I remember.

I could go one about each girl, but I won't because I know myself and wouldn't stop or make all that much sense. ;)

Sure the bad guys were a little campy, and the dialogue even more so, but damn this show shaped me. To this day I want a group of friends like these girls. The kinda friends you can fight with, you can laugh with, and that at the end of the day will come with you to the North Pole and kick some Dark Kingdom ass. :D Or you know, the first two.

if you liked this you should check out these two spams by fuya_ginga because they're awesome.
