an important father's day

yesterday my dad and i went to an antique boat show up in md. i drove across the bay bridge for the first time. it was beautiful, and the air smelled sweet like crepe myrtle and wet and salty. delicious. we saw flowers and red-winged blackbirds along the way. the boat show was surprisingly interesting; classic boats are actually very much like classic cars, and so very pretty. it was hilarious, you could tell when the boats were from because they looked like cars from the same period. three even had tailfins! the ones from the forties were snub-nosed, and gleaming, polished, red woods. mostly cedar. mm. i rescued some wayward horseshoe crabs who were tangled in weeds above the tide line. (i thought they would be fine, but apparently two men nearby were quite alarmed.) there were many dogs to pet, and i went on a trumpy yacht. trumpys were very big in the forties; if you were anybody, or you wanted to be anybody, you had a trumpy. the presidential yacht was a trumpy. i smiled when i heard that, because when i first saw it i somehow pictured handsome shirtless kennedys diving from it. then dad and i went on a tour cruise around the bay, even though we've been before. we just want to get out on the water. we passed by osprey nests, heard about the economic and environmental woes of the bay from captain karl, a very personable and knowledgable fellow.

after that we left, having seen all there was to see. we had beautiful sunny weather the whole time. we drove to oxford, where i drove on a ferry for the first time. we drove around and found a restaurant to eat at, and watched thunderheads roll in while we ate. we stayed out on the porch when the storm finally hit, just laughing and having a good time as we were thoroughly soaked. then we went home, and saw many many deer while we drove.

later, it turned out that i had left my purse on captain karl's boat. he was so kind as to leave us several messages, and he told us that we could pick it up even if he wasn't there. he even gave us the combination to the ticket booth, and said it would be safe in there! i told dad i'd get up early today (sunday) to drive back and pick it up to be home in time for our lunch reservations at 2941. but when i woke up this morning, the house was empty. they came home a few hours later with my purse, because they had both gotten up and left at 4:30 to go get it for me, because they thought i needed my rest.

my mom said when she came in "the whole way there we laughed at the irony of getting up at the crack of dawn on father's day just to help out your kid. how classic."

i really love my dad. i am lucky to have him. yesterday at the boat show, i thought 'wow, this is a really special father's day. sometimes we don't do much.' and then i thought, of course it's special. every father's day i have with him is special, because my dad lost his pop when he was only 12. today he and my grandma are driving into arlington to put flowers on grandpa's grave. i didn't want to go; i knew it would only scare me and make me cry alot. i'm just glad that my father and i were somehow able to get over whatever it was that used to make us scream at and hit each other and hate so much. i don't know how it happened, or why --- when i think about how bad it was, i'm amazed! but i'm so glad it did.

happy father's day to my dad. i love you.
